Multi-granular Sliding Windows over Data Streams

Continuous queries over nonterminating data streams usually specify windows in order to obtain an evolving --yet bounded-- set of tuples and thus provide timely and incremental results. In this talk, we introduce a multi-level sliding window operator that concurrently spans overlapping time periods, essentially providing at each granularity a varying, but always finite portion of the most recent stream items. Taking advantage of its properties, we suggest a suitable data structure that can efficiently maintain tuples qualifying for each granular level.

Blocking Techniques for Web-Scale Entity Resolution

Entity Resolution constitutes one of the cornerstone tasks for the integration of overlapping information sources. Due to its quadratic complexity, a bulk of research has focused on improving its efficiency so that it can be applied to Web Data collections, which are inherently voluminous and highly heterogeneous. The most common approach for this purpose is blocking, which clusters similar entities into blocks so that the pair-wise comparisons are restricted to the entities contained within each block.

Event Recognition Under Uncertainty and Incomplete Data

Symbolic event recognition systems have been successfully applied to a variety of application domains, extracting useful information in the form of events, allowing experts or other systems to monitor and respond when significant events are recognised. In a typical event recognition application, however, these systems often have to deal with a significant amount of uncertainty. In this thesis, we address the issue of uncertainty in logic-based event recognition by extending the Event Calculus with probabilistic reasoning.

Distributional Semantic Models for Affective Text Analysis and Grammar Induction

We present our recent work on language-agnostic algorithms for the construction of distributed semantic models (DSMs) using web-harvested corpora. A corpus is created from web document snippets and the relevant semantic similarity statistics are encoded in a semantic network. We propose the notion of semantic neighborhoods that are defined using co-occurrence or context similarity features. Three neighborhood-based similarity metrics are proposed, motivated by the hypotheses of attributional and maximum sense similarity.

Με μεγάλη επιτυχία ολοκληρώθηκε το δωρεάν σεμινάριο 7 διαλέξεων που διοργάνωσε το Telecoms Lab - Net Media Lab του Ινστιτούτου Πληροφορικής και Τηλεπικοινωνιών του Ε.Κ.Ε.Φ.Ε. «Δημόκριτος» με τίτλο «Εισαγωγή στα Εργαλεία Αξιολόγησης και Προγράμματα Παρέμβασης των Μαθητών με Ειδικές Εκπαιδευτικές Ανάγκες» το οποίο πραγματοποιήθηκε σε 4 sessions το Σάββατο 20 Σεπτεμβρίου και την Κυριακή 21 Σεπτεμβρίου 2014 και ώρες 09:30-13:30 και 14:30-18:30 αντίστοιχα στο Κεντρικό Αμφιθέατρο του Ε.Κ.Ε.Φ.Ε. «Δημόκριτος».

Telecoms Lab - Net Media Lab announces a new round of seminars for the academic year 2014-2015 entitled "New Technologies & Modern Approaches in Special Education - Evaluation Tools and Intervention Programs for Students with Special Educational Needs".

The seminars will kick-off with a free seminar, that will take place over the weekend of 20 & 21 September 2014 at the Main Auditorium of N.C.S.R. "Demokritos".

Dr. K. Peppas, member of WiCom laboratory, gave a lecture entitled: "Modern wireless communication networks", at the Summer School organized by NCSR Demokritos, between 7 and 18 July 2014.

Ευρύτερος στόχος της ερευνητικής δράσης OnLabs είναι η ανάπτυξη τεχνολογίας για την ανακάλυψη, δοκιμή και αξιολόγηση τεχνικών εκπαίδευσης σε σχέση με διάφορα καθήκοντα και λειτουργίες που λαμβάνουν χώρα εντός ενός ρεαλιστικού περιβάλλοντος. Ως ρεαλιστικό θεωρείται ένα περιβάλλον όπου οι χρήστες αλληλεπιδρούν με διάφορα αντικείμενα που είναι μέσα στο περιβάλλον και με την αλληλεπίδραση αποκτούν μαθησιακή εμπειρία ή δεξιότητες χειρισμού των αντικειμένων ή δεξιότητες εκτέλεσης σύνθετων δραστηριοτήτων/διαδικασιών.

Detecting all repeated patterns in sequences using suffix arrays

Pattern detection is a topic of great interest for many sciences. Suffix trees and suffix arrays are the most commonly used data structures for this purpose. For such purposes we have created the novel algorithm ARPaD, which uses the suffix array under a new perspective. With the use of the recursive algorithm ARPaD over the actual suffix array we can perform a fast analysis of any kind of sequences and detect all repeated patterns in linear time complexity.

Modelling of body-centric communications channel: Investigation of the influence of wearable antennas and user mobility

In recent years the amount of wearable devices on human body has been dramatically increased with various functionalities being served in many areas. The trend of incorporating more and more wearable devices in our everyday life has come to fulfil the need for closer and accurate monitoring and preventing in healthcare, but also for entertainment, fitness and convenience purposes.
