Exploring new and innovative techniques for complex event processing and especially focusing on vessel and sea traffic. While frequently applications focus on simply managing and filtering streams of data, we intend to focus on an aspect that has shown a remarkable increase of interest in recent years: data mining and analytics. More precisely, we explore new ways of representing complex phenomena — using either rule or machine learning approaches — and applying these results to data from the maritime domain.
Real-world problems/challenges that the research is aiming to address Complex event processing has multiple applications in the domain of maritime transport. Detecting activities of interest for the local authorities or third party observers has proven to be quite beneficial for ensuring the legality of movement at sea, as well as assisting in preventing unwanted interactions between vessels, such as piracy or illegal trafficking.
