Presentation of the Agricultural Information Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the activities of the Knowledge Engineering Laboratory

The talk will briefly introduce the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the Agricultural Information Institute (AII) that is located at the Bejing campus of CAAS. CAAS is the nation’s largest stakeholder and producer of agricultural research. AAI is one of the institutes of CAAS (http://www.caas.cn/en/administration/research_institutes/) that has been established in 1957.

Algorithms for generating arguments in classical logic - a connection graph approach

Argumentation is a vital aspect of intelligent behaviour by humans; it provides the means for comparing conflicting information by analysing pros and cons, or in equivalence, arguments for and against a case when trying to make a decision. A number of frameworks have been proposed for formally defining an argument and relations of attack between arguments.

Supporting seismology research in Europe - a data-intensive overview of the FP7/VERCE project

VERCE (http://www.verce.eu ) developed a service-oriented e-Science platform to enable data analysis and modelling methods that exploit the increasing wealth of open data generated by the seismology scientific community. In doing so, VERCE integrated resources over distributed, heterogeneous infrastructures (Grid, HPC, Cloud, Departmental/Private) as well as it pioneered ways for researchers to describe and execute their scientific methods via reusable, transferrable, data-centric workflows.

Learning from data streams in theory and practice

Data capture and networking advances have increased the availability of continually arriving real-time information in a variety of settings, ranging from the digital economy to the internet of things. Learning (in the statistical sense of parameter estimation and inference) on data streams has two unique constraints. First, its memory footprint needs to be constant over time, and often very light. Second. it is expected that real-time phenomena tend to change over time, often in unpredictable ways, so that models must assume a dynamic, evolving process.

Computer Science and Engineering Research at the University of North Texas

The University of North Texas Department of Computer Science and Engineering has research programs in algorithms and computational science, computer security, computer systems and networks, databases and data mining, intelligent systems, and software engineering. This talk will overview these areas and discuss the collaborative Ph. D. program between UNT CSE and Demokritos.

3 & 5 of June: Lecture about "Data Journalism" at the Department of Communication and Media Studies

Two lectures with the title "Journalism, data and lies" was given by Dr George Giannakopoulos of SKEL in the context of the course "Design and development of digital media and multi-media" at the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, on June 3 & 5.

The other IT from another Europe

Last week the EU parliament published a report that recommends investing in Free Software (aka opensource) to replace expensive proprietary software from the US and increase the technological independence of Europe. Such steps would also counter US/UK mass surveillance against European citizens, public institutions and companies. The report reads like an update of a previous report from July 2001 that also sought to achieve these goals.
