As per its organisational structure, the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications of NCSR Demokritos (NCSRD), is organised into two main research divisions: Intelligent Information Systems and Telecommunications & Networks. Each division comprises Research Groups that carry out the Institute’s core scientific activities in line with its thematic priorities, under the guidance of dedicated Boards responsible for research coordination and innovation.
Division of Telecommunications and Networks (TN): The TN Division conducts research on state-of-the-art and future technologies for telecommunication networks and systems, contributing to digital transition, environmental, social, and economic sustainability, as well as trustworthiness and privacy. Activities cover a range of topics, including wireless technologies for frequencies below 6 GHz as well as millimeter waves and subTHz frequencies, advanced transmit/receive techniques, and MIMO systems; antenna design, implementation, and characterisation, including wearable antennas and incorporation of metamaterials; 5G/6G cloud and edge-cloud architectures inserting intelligence through programmability and AI techniques; connecting IoT, edge, and cloud technologies; formulation of models for performance evaluation and design of improved protocols, mechanisms, and processes; deployment of experimental infrastructures; cybersecurity certification and post-quantum cryptography applications; and end-to-end user services and vertical applications.
Regarding the collaborations with research teams of other NCSRD Institutes, these mainly concern the utilisation of the materials science in the research of the antenna technology and microwave devices. A more than 10-years collaboration has been developed with the Superconductivity and Magnetic Oxides Group of INN.
Division of Intelligent Information Systems (IIS): IIS Division stands as one of Greece’s largest AI-focused research ecosystems, continuing the longstanding tradition of NCSRD in Artificial Intelligence. The division is composed of a dynamic and diverse team, united by a common purpose: to advance AI through cutting-edge methods and technologies. IIS includes seasoned researchers with expertise across a broad range of AI domains, as well as talented young scientists bringing new perspectives and ideas. In recent years, the scientific background of the Division’s personnel has been diversified, leading to a multidisciplinary population that has expanded the possibilities for innovation. As AI becomes embedded in daily life, our research scope has broadened to address its societal and political dimensions, along with exploring advances in fields such as life sciences, natural sciences, and culture. The interdisciplinary environment at NCSRD plays a key role in fostering this development. IIS is dedicated to developing Trustworthy AI methods and tools that generate tangible societal impact. Its work spans from foundational research to applications geared towards innovation and the marketplace. IIS actively participates in international collaborations and aim to contribute to national economic growth. A core aspect of its mission is the democratisation of AI through comprehensive education initiatives, targeting audiences from school students to young professionals and researchers.
In addition to its core research divisions, the Institute is supported by a range of specialised Units that enhance its research, educational, and operational capabilities. To effectively fulfill its mission, the Institute operates a number of units across key functional areas.
Education activities are coordinated by a dedicated team, while communication and outreach are managed through the Communications Office. Research project support is facilitated by the Project Management Office, which contributes to the management of funded projects and aids in proposal preparation. A specialised Legal Team handles legal matters related to projects and works closely with the Legal and Innovation Offices of NCSRD. Human resource functions are managed by a dedicated HR Team, while matters of inclusivity are addressed through the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team, operating within the framework of the NCSRD Gender Equality Plan. IT services and the Network Operation Centre (NOC), together with the eGovernance Office—initially developed within the Institute and now operating as a separate department—provide technical and digital support across NCSRD. This integrated structure ensures that research, innovation, and institutional development are supported effectively, with coherence, efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
