We identify a number of common issues in open systems based on ad hoc networks, for applications such as computer-mediated communication, vehicular networks, and virtual organizations. These issues appear to require some form of self-directed (organized) adaptation based on organizational structures and social networks. Cheerfully plundering the social sciences for solutions, we present a series of computational frameworks, culminating in a proposal for micro-social systems (MSS). MSS combine rules of social-* (* = order, exchange, choice and network) in a single framework. We illustrate the concept with some simple applications, including resource allocation, adaptive security, and enhancing QoE (quality of experience).
