An Integrated Platform for Ephemeral Data Cataloguing, Content Management and e-Learning.

The e-PYXIS platform was developed under the scope of the eSchoolLib project, which was to outline the potential of correlating open sources and proprietary e-Learning technologies in order to unify e-class, e-library and e-working environments into one unified platform. The e-PYXIS platform assits the learning process, improves and evolves­ the teaching methods and motivates the users to enrich the secodnay education school library with digital material.

Functional Decomposition:

The current­ trend on e-Learning infrastrucutres is mainly composed o­f a learni­ng management system optimised to serve large numbers of students using a digital version of traditional didactic instructional methods. This kind of system instructional service can be characterized as a "push" type (i.e. provision). Libraries on the other hand, apply a different paradigm such as to provide students with access to online systems and allowing them to "pull" (retrieve) information from databases which suits their learning needs.­ ­

e-PYXIS conflates both push & pull instructional services embracing with the ­Advanced Services (searching – automatic categorization – content management), the Personalization, the Accessibility and the Security functional groups.­

For the development of the e-PYXIS platform, a File Management System (FMS) named eDoc™ was enhanced with innovative functionalities, a Learning Management System (LMS) named Dokeos was to be used by teachers to build and manage their online courses whereas a Java-enabled portal called Liferay was realized as the students' e–working environment. This is depicted in the following diagram.
