Application of image processing and pattern recognition methods to archaeological finds

Throughout the studying of archaeological evidence various difficulties may arise, that can be usually overcome by the decisive interference of computer science. A typical example of the contribution of the specific domain of image processing and pattern recognition combined with the curve fitting, to archaeological research, is the identification and classification of ancient Greek inscriptions according to the carver that made them. The act of identification and classification is achieved by extracting a prototype from each inscription and by comparing it to the rest of a certain group.

An equivalent example, is the contribution of pattern recognition to the studying of the style of the prehistoric wall paintings at Akrotiri, Thira; the use of models, and indeed geometrical ones, as a construction method has been pointed out.
