NCSR “Demokritos” organizes a panel discussion on “Entrepreneurship and Innovation”, in the context of the 3rd Hellenic Forum for Science Technology and Innovation ( and the Demokritos Summer School 2015, on Friday, July 3, 2015 between 10:00 – 13:00, at the central amphitheater of NCSR “Demokritos”.

A number of experts originating from different areas will give short talks aiming to give the audience a better picture regarding the current situation, existing problems as well as opportunities and prospects regarding entrepreneurship and innovation. Discussion with the audience will follow.

Coordinating the discussion: Elina Makri 
Elina Makri was born in Athens, where she still lives. Elina left Greece to study Law in France and International and European Law in Belgium. Returning to Greece, she founded the Greek branch of the pan European digital youth media ( She is the vice-President of Babel International and since 2006 she has participated and implemented various projects related to new media, always involving a pan-European newsroom and network of media professionals. Οn 2014 she founded the Youth Investigative Journalism Prize ( Elina was awarded Charlemagne Youth Prize on May 2012 in Germany. Elina is also the co-founder of (, a networked digital platform designed to trace and connect journalists, fixers and media professionals around the globe. She is also the Greek editor of (, a Greek-German media project in which German and Greek journalists are working together on topics of common concern, serving the European public interest. Elina currently works as project manager of media projects that include ICT and data processing, driven by the ever-increasing intersection between technology, science and social needs – demands, providing for social and political innovation.

Dr. Vangelis Karkaletsis (IIT, NCSR Demokritos) 
Dr. Vangelis Karkaletsis is Research Director at NCSR ‘Demokritos’, head of the Software & Knowledge Engineering Lab – SKEL (, and responsible for the educational activities of the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications. His research interests are in the areas of content analysis, natural language interfaces, ontology engineering, and personalization. He has been coordinator or scientific/technical manager in many European and national research projects. He served for several years in the Board of the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society. He has organised international summer schools, workshops and conferences. He is co-founder of the spin-off company ‘i-sieve Technologies’ that exploited SKEL research work on on-line content analysis. He is currently involved in the founding of the new spin-off company Newsum that exploits SKEL technology on multilingual and multi-document summarization.

Dr. Ioannis A. Vetsikas (IIT, NCSR Demokritos) 
Dr. Ioannis A. Vetsikas holds a PhD from Cornell University, USA (2005) on the topic of designing trading agents in complex systems in the presence of tradeoffs. His research interests lie in the areas of Distributed Artificial Intelligence, Multi-agent Systems and e-Commerce. He is investigating applications of these techniques in a number of the areas, e.g. service procurement and electricity markets. He is actively involved in the trading agent community. His agents have won the International Trading Agent Competition (TAC) on several occasions. He served as general chair for TAC-10 and TAC-13 and is currently on the board of directors of the Association for Trading Agent Research.

George Doukidis (Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit, Athens University of Economics and Business) 
Professor George Doukidis is the Head of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), director of the E-business Center (ELTRUN) and director of the MSc in Management Sciences and Technology. He holds an MSc and PhD from the London School of Economics where he taught for 8 years. He was the first chairman of TANEO (Venture Capital Fund of Funds) and initiator of the international student competition on digital innovation and entrepreneurship Ennovation. In 2009 he received the European Case Study Award in “Knowledge, Information and Communication Systems”. He is co-author of eight books published by international publishers and more than 200 scientific articles.

Prof. Nicholas Haritakis (National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Department of Economics) 
Prof. Nicholas Haritakis was Secretary General of Competition and Privatization at the Ministry of Industry, Research and Technology, and Consultant on financial issues at the European Parliament. He is a member of the American Economic Association. He served for many years as executive director of the New Economy Development Fund (TANEO). His research has been published in international and national scientific journals.

Manolis Chlouverakis (KEMEL) 
Manolis Chlouverakis is Chairman of the Board of the «HELLENIC VOLUNTEER MANAGERS CENTER» (KEMEL) since 2007. He has studied Electrical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens and Economics at the Athens University. He served at Johnson & Johnson for 25 years. In 1985 he became Operations Director and in 1989 Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson Hellas SA. From 1998 until his retirement in 2003 he held positions of increased responsibility in Europe and in the USA.

Antonis Ikonomou (Innovathens) 
Antonis Ikonomou is Electrical Engineer (NTUA) with a long experience in the fields of Automation, Industrial Robotics, development of state of the art applications in the area of disabled people rehabilitation as well as in business exploitation of innovative products and services. He has managed a series of High Tech companies (Zenon, Retail-link, Raymetrics, P.A.N. Antistixis) and contributed in their entrepreneurial evolution, the expansion/diversification of their activities and the improvement of their financial results. He has an outstanding experience in Human Resource management, high demanding R&D project management and the negotiation and implementation of big scale technological projects.

Christos Lytras (egg – enter•grow•go) 
Since February 2013, Christos Lytras is Site Manager of the “egg – enter•grow•go” programme a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative by Eurobank designed and implemented in cooperation with Corallia, that aims to boost young innovative entrepreneurship and improve employment opportunities for young people in Greece, through an integrated incubation, acceleration and co-working programme. Christos has been working for Eurobank for the past ten years as a Project Manager across different products and services in local and group-wide (CEE – SEE) implementations. His areas of expertise lay in Target Operating Model design, process reengineering, performance measurement and application of lean tools and methods.

Yannis Doxaras (Warply) 
Yannis Doxaras is the CEO and founder of Warply (since 2012) and he has been involved in the mobile world over the last 10 years. He is a theoretical physicist, graduate of the University of Athens, NTUA and Cambridge University. His interests include the areas of big data, data privacy, advertisement technologies, and personalized marketing. He has developed new products and services in advertisement and mobile consumer loyalty, which have contributed to the mobile ecosystem worldwide. He is the author of scientific books on e-commerce and consumer loyalty, while he continues to write for Marketing Week, Huffington Post and Eleftheros Typos on new marketing trends. He can speak three foreign languages and travels continually as he is in business in 3 countries – Spain, N. America and India.

Christina Fili (Ashoka Greece) 
An entrepreneur at heart, Christina Fili practiced her first steps in the entrepreneurship in my early twenties by offering innovative solutions to the educational challenges faced by children and teenagers from underprivileged backgrounds. After working 10 years in this field, she decided to commit herself to a bigger idea by joining the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games Athens 2004. Her next career steps brought her to the world of single family offices, where she had the honor and the chance to collaborate with large international organizations and to meet with some of the most influential persons in the world. She is committed to personal development; She studied French Literature with Paris-Sorbonne University and European Civilization with Hellenic Open University. She earned an MBA from the Open University (U.K.). After assigning to herself the mission of leaving a better world to her son, she engaged with Ashoka, the first and biggest global network of leading social entrepreneurs, to turn into a reality the vision of building a sustainable social entrepreneurship ecosystem in her homeland of Greece.
