AIEdu is a one-year European research project funded by the Civic Innovation Fund and implemented by the National Centre for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’ (NCSRD) in collaboration with the European Wergeland Center (EWC).
The project is addressed to educators of formal and non-formal education and aims to encourage the development of new approaches and teaching practices in the field of citizenship education by focusing on the impact of AI in society.
The project activities were designed based on the digital citizenship education model, developed by the Council of Europe, as well as the Council of Europe’s Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture to support educators to become better aware of the responsible and respectful ways to use AI as part of their work. Upon completion of the project, educators will have learned how to support the development of the students’ digital skills and AI competencies in order to protect and promote human rights and inclusion in the digital era.
In phase 1 of the research, the project seeked to understand educators’ familiarity with AI and its potential use in their classrooms, as well as to highlight benefits, challenges and good practices. Therefore, between May and mid-June 2024, an online questionnaire was distributed to educators. Some of the participants, if they wished, could be invited to participate later in a focus group to explore these dimensions in more depth.
In phase 2, a series of webinars (3 in total) in the field of AI & Education was offered online in the autumn 2024 (September-November 2024) in English, addressed to educators who are interested. Upon successful completion of the 3 webinars, participants were issued a certificate of participation.
