Athens Green Hackathon 2013

Athens Green Hackathon 2013 is the second in a series of events where hackers and developers meet to create and apply new ideas, targeting a sustainable and healthier future! One of the main goals of a Green Hackathon is to showcase the potential of Open Data and APIs that make access to environmental, agricultural and biodiversity data easier.
Athens Green Hackathon 2013 is co-organized by Agro-Know Technologies, the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications of the NCSR Demokritos and the coLab Workspace and will be hosted at various venues around Athens! This time we decided to slightly change the process. Thus, we have also invited researchers in the fields of statistics, mathematics, physics, chemistry and agriculture, together with experts in artificial intelligence, trying to take advantage of their collective brainpower. Apart from this, we also organize some training sessions before the actual event, aiming to train the participants on the Open Data in Agriculture and the tools & technologies to be used during the hackathon!
The event is funded by the research projects agINFRA (“A data infrastructure for agriculture”) and SemaGrow (“Data Intensive Techniques to Boost the Real-Time Performance of Global Agriculture Data Infrastructures”) under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union.
We will begin with a course entitled: “Introduction to Data Science for Agriculture”, that will be held on Friday, November 29th, 2013 at the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications of the N.C.S.R. Demokritos. A Training Day will then be held on Thursday, December 12th, 2013 at the same venue, during which the participants will be trained on the tools and technologies to be used during the Athens Green Hackathon 2013!
Finally, the Athens Green Hackathon 2013 will take place from Saturday, December 14th, 2013 to Sunday, December 15th, 2013 at the coLab Workspace in Athens. Its scope will be for the participants to utilize the knowledge gained during the previous days to develop applications that will address one of the challenges given at the beginning of the event! The most successful ones will be awarded during the Closing Ceremony that will take place on Sunday, December 15th, 2013 at the Impact HUB Athens.
