On the 28th of September 2017, the final review of the AF3 project – Advanced Forest Fire Fighting (FP7 – SECURITY, 607276) took place in Brussels at the Research Executive Agency offices. It was a very successful process where reviewers and Project Officers expressed their warm compliments.
AF3 project is one the last active Integration Projects of the FP7 framework and also the most important research project in the area of forest firefighting, funded by the European Commission the last few years. Among the significant results of this project, there are many innovative solutions both in active counter measures (pellets that allow airdrop from higher altitude, with more accuracy and safety and also with a capability of night airdrop) and in passive counter measures (automated capsules creating fire prevention zones), in integrated crisis management technologies, on-time detection and monitoring, mobile communication applications interacting with public, modeling and simulation of evacuating residential areas & houses and so forth.
NCSR “Demokritos” participated in the project with Integrated Systems Laboratory (ISL) of the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications under the supervision of the Scientific Director Dr. Stelios C.A. Thomopoulos, and the technical managers Dr. Dimitris Kyriazanos and Mr. Alkis Astyakopoulos.
An essential milestone of the project was the high level demonstration that took place in June 2016 at the Naval Base complex located at Skaramagkas (Greece), under the technical management of NCSR Demokritos and in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence, the Navy, the Air Force and the Army.
The large scale field test was highly successful including real fire, operations with ground and air forces (two Canadair CL – 215 , UAV, MEA “Pegasus II” and more) and operational personnel of 90 people of the end-users from Greece, Spain and Italy.
The Total Budget of this project was EUR 19.270.384 . NCSR Demokritos received EUR 1.100.000 funding by the European Commission.
