Οn July 11, 2018 the iASiS project organised the Big Data for Precision Medicine Symposium (http://events.demokritos.gr/?session=big-data-for-precision-medicine) in the frame of the 6th Hellenic Forum, at the campus of NCSR Demokritos in Athens, Greece. The Symposium hosted a number of representatives from European and Greek research and commercial projects, including all 6 projects funded under the topic “Big Data supporting Public Health policies” of the Horizon 2020 programme. Over 240 delegates participated in the Symposium, among which young and senior researchers from various fields, along with health and research policy makers (including the Greek Deputy Minister of Research & Innovation, K. Fotakis). The Symposium included short presentations and panel discussions on the future of Precision Medicine, the role of Big Data and how health policies need to be shaped so as to help patients in the long term.
Dr. Paliouras, host of the event and coordinator of the iASiS project, said: We were pleasantly surprised by the turnout of related projects and the interdisciplinary background of the participants, including policy makers who welcome our call for a Symposium on Big Data for Precision Medicine. The event was commended by speakers and delegates alike, providing an indication of the need for similar initiatives throughout Europe and internationally.
