The Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications participated in the “Bioethical Challenges in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” event on October 14, 2025 at the Main Auditorium of NCSR Demokritos​ , celebrating this year’s World Bioethics Day (19 October).

The workshop featured presentations by distinguished scientists, researchers, educators, university students, and secondary school pupils, highlighting the opportunities, challenges, and ethical questions arising from the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence. Particular emphasis was placed on the need for a responsible, transparent, and human-centered approach to technology.

Dora Katsamori, Associate Researcher at IIT, delivered a presentation titled “AI and Education: Preparing the digital citizen,” focusing on the latest developments in the field and their implications for digital literacy and responsible technology use. Her talk highlighted IIT’s leading role in advancing research and initiatives at the forefront of the intersection between artificial intelligence and education.

Alexandros Nousias, Collaboraring Researcher at IIΤ, explored in his talk whether cognitive Artificial Intelligence systems constitute an extension or a substitute for human judgment, posing the dilemma of ’empowerment or atrophy of the mind’.

A lively and interesting discussion followed, bringing together experts from various fields, institutional representatives, educators, and citizens, underscoring the interdisciplinary nature of bioethics and its role in connecting scientific progress with social responsibility and public dialogue.
