On May 22nd, the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications participated in Digital World Summit Greece 2025, represented by our researcher Dr Xenia Ziouvelou as a member of the MultiStakeholder Committee of Digital World Summit Greece and the Director of IIT, Dr Vangelis Karkaletsis, who participated in the panel discussion “Secure development and use of Artificial Intelligence”.

Dr Vangelis Karkaletsis, Director of the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications at NCSR Demokritos, joined leading experts at the Digital World Summit Greece in a panel discussion focused on the safe development and use of AI. During the discussion, Dr Karkaletsis highlighted that “instead of trying to exhaustively describe technologies […] It would be better to focus on principles: what we want to allow, what we ban, and what the protection objectives are. When legislation becomes too technological-centric, it loses its duration and functionality“.

Regarding Dr Ziouvelou’s contribution to the Summit’s MultiStakeholder Committee, the MultiStakeholder Committee brings together representatives of the bodies that shape digital policy at national and international levels. The participation of renowned experts in the DWS Greece processes ensures that the Summit’s initiative focuses on current technological issues and remains participatory and open.

Dr Ziouvelou is the scientific head of the AI Politeia Laboratory at IIT, an external innovation expert for the European Commission, a member of the Council of Europe’s AI and Education Group, and serves on the scientific committee of AI4People Institute, Europe’s first global forum on the social impacts of artificial intelligence. She also participates in a number of European AI-related activities, including the General Purpose AI subgroup of the EU Artificial Intelligence Council Steering Group, as a member of the Greek delegation, and co-chairs the AI Focus Group of European DIGITAL SME Alliance. As well as a number of EU-funded research and industrial projects, including flagship EU projects and initiatives on artificial intelligence, covering different thematic areas in the context of technology-mediated innovation and development in different industrial sectors.
