The third European Language Resource Coordination (ELRC) workshop in Greece took place virtually on 15 December 2020 and was organised by the ELRC consortium and the Institute for Language and Speech Processing / Athena Research Center.
Developers, integrators and users of Language Technology, both from the private and public sector shared their thoughts with the participants in a fruitful discussion on the status and prospects of Language Technology for Greek, having in mind questions such as Can we fully use our own language in our digital interactions? Is our language adequately supported and ready to keep pace with the technological advancements of the AI era?.
Researchers Dr. George Giannakopoulos and Dr. Georgios Petasis, SKEL lab, participated in the panel discussion about the potential of Language Technology and AI – Language Technologies in Greece and how language data, i.e. texts and speech, can fuel development in Artificial Intelligence. The panel discussion brought together Ion Androutsopoulos, Athens University of Economics and Business, Vassilis Katsouros, ILSP/Athena RC, Spyros Raptis, Innoetics/Samsung and Themos Stafylakis, Omilia – Conversational Intelligence and was moderated by Stelios Piperidis, ILSP/Athena RC, ELRC.
IIT’s legal advisor, Alexandros Nousias participated also in the panel discussion entitled Language data creation, management and sharing: existing practices and challenges, along with Dimitris Gioutikas, National School for Public Administration and Local Government, Dimitris Kapopoulos and Athanasios Sklapanis, Ministry of Digital Governance and Vassilis Papavassiliou, ILSP/Athena RC. The discussion was moderated by Maria Gavriilidou, ILSP/Athena RC, ELRC Technology National Anchor Point and the panelists had the opportunity to discuss about questions arose in the context of the legal and technical framework for the distribution of digital language data in Greece.
