The NCSR Demokritos is actively strengthening its role in European defence research and innovation, building on its strategic collaboration with Naval Group. Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2023 with Naval Group and Naval Group Hellas, this collaboration has established a solid framework for joint research and development activities across both civil and defence domains, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and energy systems.
In this framework, researchers from NCSR Demokritos participated in Naval Group’s 6th R&D Partners’ Day, held at the Institut Français de Grèce in Athens. The event brought together leading industrial partners, research organisations, and institutional stakeholders, aiming to accelerate the transition from advanced research to deployable defence capabilities.

As part of this growing ecosystem, NCSR Demokritos contributes to multiple collaborative projects funded under the European Defence Fund (EDF), supporting the development of next-generation technologies for the European defence landscape. Among them, IIT participation is reflected in four projects, highlighting its strong contribution in AI and cybersecurity.
Mr George Xilouris is involved in the AInception project, focusing on AI-driven cyber threat detection and response, while also leading the Accreditation pillar in the CITADEL Range project. In parallel, Dr Dimitris Kyriazanos and Dr Theodoros Giannakopoulos contribute to the FaRADAI project, advancing adaptive AI systems designed to operate under constrained data conditions and high-risk environments.
Through these activities, IIT reinforces its contribution to the development of robust, trustworthy, and operational solutions, aligned with Europe’s strategic objective of strengthening technological sovereignty in defence.
