The pilot operation of a 5G network and the provision of 5G services was successfully demonstrated at the “Stavros Mavrothalassitis” Municipal Stadium of Aigaleo on the 2nd of October 2019, during a friendly football match between the teams of “A.C. THEMISTOKLIS” and “AMATEURS AEGALEO” as part of the European 5G-ESSENCE research project, which is operated by the MNL Lab of Dr.Anastasios Kourtis.
During the football match, 5G Edge network acceleration technology was demonstrated, which achieves low latency and improved user Quality of Experience. The game was broadcasted via a 360 camera, with broadcasting / eMBMS technology, developed in the context of 5G-ESSENCE, offering to local spectators an enriched event experience.
The event was attended by government representatives and city officials amongst others:
- the Deputy Minister of Procedures Simplification, Mr. Georgios Georgandas and the Special Adviser to the Minister Mr. Athanasios Staveris Polykalas, of the Ministry of Digital Governance.
- MPs of Β2΄ Section of Western Athens: Mr. Kriton– Elias Arsenis (DiEM25) and Mrs. Maria Athanasiou (Greek Solution),
- Andreas Leotsakos, Vice President of Western Athens Division,
- Dimitris Kalogeropoulos, President of the Hellenic Agency for Local Development & Local Government (E.E.T.A.A.) S.A,
- Theodoros Arvanitis, Secretary General of the Western Athens Development Association (ASDA),
- the Mayor of Egaleo, Ioannis Gikas, the Deputy Mayors: Mr. Christos Arvanitis (Sanitation, Recycling, Civil Protection & Public Transport), Mr. Elias Mandros (Social Protection & Business Regulation), Mr Nikolaos Asimakopoulos (Education & Culture).
- the former Mayor Mr. Dimitris Birbas, the former Deputy Mayor Mr. Stelios Vassiliadis,
- City officials, employees and citizens
The exciting point-of-view perspectives, the reduced production costs and the increased key 5G-ESSENCE functionalities are of main interest to mobile operators, stadium/venue owners, broadcasters, sponsors, as well as for the visitors themselves.
