Foreword

It is my pleasure to announce the distribution of the Quarterly Newsletter of the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT) of NCSR 'Demokritos'. The Newsletter will contain news about our Research, Events organised and Education activities. In this 1st issue of 2011, it is worth considering the distinctions awarded to our Researchers, the co-operation agreement with the Foundation of Hellenic World (FHW), the new funded projects started this period, the dissemination of research results, the appointments for chairing and organising of many scientific events and the co-organisation of the International 'Study Abroad Program' with the University of Texas at Arlington.

My sincere congratulations to all the members of the Institute for their effort and great achievements.

Research

B. Gatos, I. Pratikakis and S. J. Perantonis received a distinction from Pattern Recognition Journal (Elsevier)
The publication titled "Adaptive Degraded Document Image Binarization" (Pattern Recognition, Vol. 39, pp. 317-327, 2006), received a distinction from the Publishing Director of Elsevier B.V. as one of Pattern Recognition's top cited articles published between 2006 and 2010.

T. Giannakopoulos and S. Petridis won the first prize in ICMLA speaker clustering challenge
The Computational Intelligence Laboratory (CIL) participated in the speaker clustering challenge organised within the conference "International Conference On machine Learning and Applications (ICMLA) 2010" with the work "Unsupervised Speaker Clustering in a Linear Discriminant Subspace". The two authors propose a method for separating speakers in the audio signal, using an approximate application of the linear discriminant analysis. The method was evaluated based on data sets of the competition and won the first prize.
Best PhD Thesis Prize was awarded to George Alexandropoulos
IIT PhD student Dr. George Alexandropoulos was recently awarded the "Best PhD Thesis of 2010 Award in the area of Informatics and Telematics" in a competition organised by the Informatics and Telematics Institute (ITI) at CERTH. His PhD thesis, entitled "Performance Study of Space Diversity Receivers over Correlated Fading Channels", was supervised by Professor K. Berberidis of the University of Patras and senior Researcher Fotis Lazarakis of IIT and was awarded by the University of Patras.
Cooperation between NCSR Demokritos and the Foundation for the Hellenic World (FHW)
In the context of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between NCSR Demokritos and FHW, IIT is going to experiment with the Neobotix ME-M470 robotic platform of FHW.

OPTI-TRANS 2nd Workshop
The OPTI-TRANS project organised its 2nd Workshop at NCSR "Demokritos", Athens, Greece, on March 23, 2011, in order to celebrate the launching of the OPTI-TRANS Journey Planner in Athens.

  • PhD theses started: Manolis Kaliorakis, Spyros Mantzouratos, Alexandros Papandreou and Martin Zamkotsian are the new PhD students at IIT.
