Foreword

You are welcome to the 2nd Newsletter of the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications. In this issue, please look at the dissemination and exploitation efforts of research results, the international cooperation event and the international MoU signed, the new R&D projects under contract negotiations, the new book and the special issue published, as well as our research publications.

My sincere congratulations to our Researchers awarded their PhD degree and postgraduate students for completing their MSc degree. Finally, I welcome Dr Ioannis Vetsikas who received a post-doctoral position at our Institute.

Research

Publication of the Special Issue "Semantic Descriptions of Medical Web Resource", edited by Vangelis Karkaletsis, Miguel A. Mayer and Pythagoras Karampiperis, at the Health Informatics Journal
The aim of this special issue is to reflect progress in the use of Semantic Web techniques for the description of health-related Web resources and to outline the major challenges and future prospects.

A new survey book from IIT researchers
Georgios Paliouras, Constantine D. Spyropoulos and George Tsatsaronis' new book, titled "Knowledge-Driven Multimedia Information Extraction and Ontology Evolution", was published by Springer. The book aims to cover the state of the art in the fields of ontology evolution and information extraction from multimedia, while also promoting the synergy between these two fields.

OPTI-TRANS ATHENS 2011 Special Edition
In the context of the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011, the OPTI-TRANS Athens 2011 Special Olympics Edition Journey Planner has been launched in agreement with the Special Olympics Athens 2011 Organizing Committee.

TASS – Industrial Testing (FP7-SEC Integration Project, TASS - Total Airport Security System)
In the context of the TASS project, Integrated Systems Laboratory (ISL) has successfully installed and tested the (passive) RFID luggage tracking system and the Finger Print and Face recognition Biometrics component, both in-house developments of ISL.

The 2nd workshop on Large Scale Hierarchical Classification has taken place in Athens, on September 5, during the ECML/PKDD 2011 conference
Very interesting presentations were given from researchers around the world and a lively discussion took place at the end of the workshop. The workshop is related to the LSHTC challenge series.

Events

27 July 2011: Workshop on «International Cooperation of NCSR 'Demokritos' with Educational and Research Institutions»
The workshop was held in the context of the 50 years anniversary celebration of NCSR and aimed at presenting the current activities and the potential for cooperation with foreign educational and research institutions, with which NCSR has signed cooperation agreements. Representatives of the US Universities University of North Texas, George Mason University, University of Texas at Arlington, and the University of Loughborough, UK, presented the corresponding institutions and the potential of their cooperation with NCSR.
