Foreword
In this issue, you can look at the new web application being developed
at IIT for analyzing and mining information in governmental data, the
events where the results of various IIT R&D projects were presented
and tested, the dissemination and exploitation efforts of our
researchers, the new R&D projects started or being under contract
negotiations, as well as our research and other publications.
My sincere congratulations to our researchers awarded their PhD degree
and to our students for completing their MSc/BSc theses. Finally, I
welcome Prof. George Dounias who spends part of his sabbatical leave
from the University of Aegean within our Institute.

Research
Gov.Insight: A web application for analyzing and mining information in government data
Gov.Insight is a web application that is being developed at the IIT, aiming to analyze, process and present government data, along with
further information, such as user opinions, comments, statistical diagrams and so forth. It exploits methods that have been, or are being,
developed by IIT, as well as by other organizations or enterprises.

14-15 November: WiCom lab participated in LAPC 2011
Wireless Communications (WiCom) Lab and Loughborough University Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department, presented a joint research work in the 7th Loughborough Antennas &
Propagation Conference (LAPC 2011), held on 14-15 November in Loughborough, UK. The paper was entitled "Parametric analysis of a Double Split-Square Resonator"
and the work has been funded under the auspices of Loughborough University and the National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos" in the frame of the bilateral PhD agreement.

Events
5-6 December: OptiTrans at Innovation Convention 2011
After the recent Research & Innovation contest organized by EU to showcase the most innovative results from research projects funded under the various EU Research Programmes across all member states,
OptiTrans The Journey Planner, developed with the coordination of NSCR "Demokritos" in the Integrated System Laboratory of the IIT and co-funded by EU-GSA,
has been selected as one of the 50 innovative results (out of 450 competing entries) to be exhibited at the Innovation Convention 2011 Exhibition that took place in Brussels.

14-15 November: IIT Director visited Loughborough University, UK
IIT Director, Costas Spyropoulos, visited Loughborough University, in order to extent the existed cooperation with Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department. IIT Director had very productive meetings
with the Vice Chancellor Prof. Shirley Pearce, the Dean of Electronic and Electrical school Prof. J. Vardaxoglou, the Dean of the school of Science Prof. Paul Chung, the Head of the Computer Science Dept.
Dr Eran Erisidinghe and Prof. Shuanghua Yang, Research Coordinator of the Dept of Computer Science, and last but not least Prof. Roy Kalawsky, Head of Systems Division at the Innovation Centre.

14 September: OptiTrans included as a journey planner of OASA (Athens Urban Transport Organisation) site
After a period of fruitful negotiations with OASA, and the extension to the Memorandum of Understanding between NSCR Demokritos and OASA that has been signed,
OptiTrans has been included in the OASA site as the optimised journey planner for Athens and the web application of OPTI-TRANS is now directly
accessible from the OASA official website.

Tribute to the Study abroad program

The Study abroad program is presented in "Technologein", the online magazine of Pathfinder.gr. The Study abroad program is designed for students from the Computer Science & Engineering Dept of the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA),
and is co-organised by IIT, the Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering of the University of the Aegean and Archipelagos, Institute of Marine Conservation.
