Foreword

I welcome you to the first issue of the IIT newsletter for 2012. Please, have a look at the activities concerning our participation to large conferences and working groups, and dissemination of our technologies and research results. Be aware also of the new projects started the last 4 months and visit the general annual meeting event of IIT.

My congratulations to Dr. N. Stamatopoulos and his supervisor Dr. B. Gatos for being awarded the best PhD thesis in the competition organized by ITI of CERTH.

Research

25 April: Best PhD Thesis Prize was awarded to Nikolaos Stamatopoulos
IIT PhD student Dr. Nikolaos Stamatopoulos was awarded the "Best PhD Thesis of 2011 Award in the area of Informatics and Telematics" in a competition organised by the Information Technologies Institute (ITI) at CERTH. His PhD thesis, entitled "Optical Processing and Analysis of Historical Documents", was supervised by senior Researcher Vassilios Gatos of IIT. This is the second consecutive year, a student from IIT gets the Best PhD Thesis Prize.
MNL participates in the FIArch Working Group
MNL researchers are involved in and contributing to the Future Internet Reference Architecture (FIArch) Working Group of the European Commission, which is working towards architectural recommendations for the Internet of the Future. MNL participated to the 3rd FIArch workshop (Brussels, Feb 22, 2012), which finalised a document on the proposed Design Principles for the Future Internet.
26-30 March: WiCom participated in EuCAP 2012
Wireless Communications (WiCom) laboratory participated in the 6th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP 2012) held on March 26-30 in Prague, Czech Republic. The paper entitled "Impact of Channel Modeling on Accurate Estimation of On-Body Channel Capacity" was included in "Propagation Aspects in Wireless Sensor Networks" Session and referred to the investigation of the impact of on-body channel modeling on the accurate estimation of body area network (BAN) systems performance.
27-29 March: CIL presented two papers in the 10th IAPR International Workshop on Document Analysis Systems
Computational Intelligence Laboratory (CIL) presented two papers in the 10th IAPR International Workshop on Document Analysis Systems (DAS 2012), held in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The papers were entitled "Efficient Word Retrieval Using A Multiple Ranking Combination Scheme" and "Word Slant Estimation Using Non-Horizontal Character Parts And Core-Region Information".

Public R&D dissemination

Optitrans: antidote for city traffic
Following its successfull penetration in the Greek public transport community, OptiTrans was featured in the news portal Pathfinder. Pathfinder is one of the most visited news Greek web portals and covers a wide range of fields. OptiTrans was featured in the field of technology-sciences in the rubric "Technologein". Mr. Rizopoulos, journalist and director of "Technologein" visited the IIT premises, was informed about the OptiTrans, and made interview with Dr. Stelios Thomopoulos and the OptiTrans Staff. New application for smart phones looking for the best route
OptiTrans, following its successfull penetration in the Greek community, was presented by the Greek Journal Kathimerini. This is the second time the newspaper Kathimerini features an article about OptiTrans in its printed version after the initial article published in April 2011. CIL is organizing three new contests in the context of ICFHR-2012
The Computational Intelligence Laboratory (CIL) is organizing three new contests in the context of the 2012 International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition (ICFHR-2012):
- ICFHR 2012 Word Spotting Competition
- Handwritten Document Image Binarization Contest (H-DIBCO 2012)
- ICFHR 2012 Writer Identification Contest

Education

CSE/BIO Study abroad program 2012
The 2012 program involves students from the Biology and the Computer Science & Engineering Departments of UTA. They will spend at IIT their first week in Athens (May 28 - 31) attending lectures from IIT researchers on databases, data collection, data storage, data modeling and data mining, in relation to the use cases in which they'll be involved during their staying at Samos.
