Makis is a post-doctoral researcher at DICE and a teaching fellow at Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). He is also a member of the Natural Language Processing Group of AUEB. He holds a Ph.D. from AUEB (2006-2011), an M.Sc. in Computer Science from AUEB (2003-2005), and a B.Sc. in Informatics from the same university (1999-2003). He has worked in various projects including INDIGO (2007-2009, European FP6 IST project), BioASQ (2012-2014, European FP7 ICT project), LangTERRA (2014-2015, European FP7-REGPOT project), BioQA (2014-2015, AUEB Research Support Program), ML2P (2016-2018, Google DNI large project).
His research interests focus on Artificial Intelligence, especially Natural Language Processing (NLP), and particularly: deep learning for NLP, deep learning for object recognition and image segmentation, text summarization, including automatic evaluation methods, information retrieval and information extraction including legal text analytics, paraphrasing, textual entailment, and their use in QA and summarization, toxic language detection especially in news portals and social media, natural language question answering (QA) especially for the biomedical domain, opinion mining, including sentiment analysis, machine learning in natural language processing.
