Dr. Xenia Ziouvelou holds a PhD in Internet Economics & Strategy (scholarship awarded) from the Department of Economics of Lancaster University (UK). Xenia is currently a Research Associate at  the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT) of NCSR “Demokritos”. She is the head of the AI Politeia Lab at IIT, which is an interdisciplinary resarch lab exploring the ethical, social, and policy implications of AI-driven innovation, ensuring this way a responsible and sustainable technology-enabled future; that is trustworthy and democratised for all and for the good.
In addition to her primary role, she serves as a visiting academic at the Business School of the University of Southampton, UK, and  as an external innovation expert for the European Commission. Xenia is a member of the expert group on AI and Education of the Council of Europe snd a member of the scientific committee of AI4People, Europe’s first Global forum on the social impacts of artificial intelligence, launched by Atomium–European Institute for Science, Media and Democracy (EISMD).
Dr Ziouvelou represents Greece as the national delegate to the EU AI Board’s Steering group on General Purpose AI subgroup. Furthermore, she also acts as the co-chair of the AI Focus Group of the European DIGITAL SME Alliance, the largest network of ICT small and medium enterprises in Europe.
Xenia has a long working experience as a senior research scientist, lecturer, Assistant Professor, technology transfer and innovation officer in research and education institutions in UK and in Greece. She has been involved as a research scientist and innovation manager in numerous EU-funded research and industrial projects including flagship EU projects and initiatives around AI, covering diverse thematic areas in the context of innovation and technology-mediated evolution across various industrial sectors.
Her principal research interests lie in the intersection of computer science, innovation, strategy, policy and ethics, focusing on responsible AI-driven innovation. Supporting the democratization of AI in a sustainable way, Xenia’s research aims at addressing imbalances and ensuring a human-and value-centric-by-design approach to AI-driven innovation for economic and social growth and environmental sustainability.
