  • DARE - Delivering Agile Research Excellence on European e-Infrastructures

    DARE (Delivering Agile Research Excellence on European e-Infrastructures) aims to provide scientific communities with a unifying hyper-platform and development context to allow for user-friendly and reproducible carrying out of huge data-driven experiments, and rapid prototyping. DARE specifically addresses the requirements of innovating teams of research developers and scientists, who work on the intersection of software engineering and scientific domains, and on data, complexity and computing extremes.

  • Track and Know - Big Data for Mobility Tracking Knowledge Extraction in Urban Areas

    Track&Know will research, develop and exploit a new software framework that aims at increasing the efficiency of Big Data applications in the transport, mobility, motor insurance and health sectors. Stemming from industrial cases, Track&Know will develop user friendly toolboxes that will be readily applicable in the addressed markets, and will be also investigated in additional domains through liaison activities with running ICT-15 Lighthouse projects.

  • BigMedilytics - Big Data for Medical Analytics

    There are three main reasons for an immediate innovation action to apply big data technologies in Healthcare. Firstly, a Healthy nation is a Wealthy nation! An improvement in health leads to economic growth through long-term gains in human and physical capital, which ultimately raises productivity and per capita GDP. Secondly, Healthcare is one of the most expensive sectors, which accounts for 10% of the EU’s GDP continuously becoming more expensive.

  • OpJ - Open Journalism

    Fake news emerges as an important problem for journalism and democracy, building on the growing loss of confidence in media. A potential solution could be to create more and better evidence-based stories that are supported by open data and readers can directly refer to original sources.

  • MSc in Data Science

    This MSc (Master of Science) in Data Science program is the result of a collaboration between the National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos" (link is external) and the University of the Peloponnese (link is external).

  • IASIS - Integration and analysis of heterogeneous big data for precision medicine and suggested treatments for different types of patients

    The vision of IASIS is to turn the wave of data heading our way into actionable knowledge for decision makers. This will be achieved by integrating data from disparate sources, including genomics, electronic health records and bibliography, and applying advanced analytics methods to discover useful patterns. Big Data in healthcare is in its early days, and most of the potential for value creation is being unclaimed. One of the main challenges is the analysis of acquired data.

  • StoryBot - Automated workflows in news production towards robot-assisted journalism

    StoryBot aims to provide an integrated platform for automated news production and presentation (publications). We propose the idea of a bot that:
    • allows the creation of an editorial plan, with a list of topics of interest
    • collects and aggregates web content (including content from social media) in real time for each topic of interest, highlighting basic entities from each story
    • allows journalists to combine and edit content from various sources into a single story
    • publishes the news story in the format and channel chosen by the journalist

    Το υποέργο αφορά στην αναβάθμιση των υπηρεσιών του clarin:el μέσω της επικαιροποίησης/αναβάθμισης των υπαρχόντων εργαλείων και των υπηρεσιών που έχουν ενταχθεί από το ΕΚΕΦΕ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΙΤΟΣ (ΕΚΕΦΕ-Δ), και μέσω του εμπλουτισμού του clarin:el με νέους γλωσσικούς πόρους, υπηρεσίες και πιλοτικές εφαρμογές.   • datACRON - Big Data Analytics for Time Critical Mobility Forecasting

    datACRON is a research and innovation collaborative project introducing novel methods for threat and abnormal activity detection in very large fleets of moving entities spread across large geographical areas.

  • HOBBIT - Holistic Benchmarking of Big Linked Data

    Linked Data has gained significant momentum over the last years. It is now used at industrial scale in many sectors in which an increasingly large amount of rapidly changing data needs to be processed. HOBBIT is an ambitious project that aims to push the development of Big Linked Data (BLD) processing solutions by providing a family of industry-relevant benchmarks for the BLD value chain through a generic evaluation platform. We aim to make open deterministic benchmarks available to test the performance of existing systems and push the development of innovative industry-relevant solutions.

  • RADIO - Robots in assisted living environments: Unobtrusive, efficient, reliable and modular solutions for independent ageing

    Demographic and epidemiologic transitions have brought a new health care paradigm with the presence of both, growing elderly population and chronic diseases. Life expectancy is increasing as well as the need for long-term care. Institutional care for the aged population faces economical struggles with low staffing ratios and consequent quality problems.

    The revolution in information technology over the last years has proven its ability to process huge amounts of data and made evident that big data can change the world. Open Government Data (OGD), from being an obscure possibility just five years ago, is spreading across the globe at a phenomenal rate, delivering the promise to spur innovation, to deliver better services for less money, to improve planning, to increase transparency, and to reduce corruption.

  • BigDataEurope - Integrating Big Data, Software & Communities for Addressing Europe's Societal Challenges

    BigDataEurope will provide support mechanisms for all the major aspects of a data value chain, in terms of the employed data and technology assets, the participating roles and the established or evolving processes. The effectiveness of the provided support mechanisms will be assessed in different domains pertaining to Europe’s major societal challenges with respect to the needs and requirements of the related communities.   • SentIMAGi - Brand monitoring and reputation management via multi-modal sentiment analysis

    Recent brand monitoring technologies rely mostly on the textual aspect of content to derive the under-lying public sentiment with respect to a brand, essentially ignoring the wealth of - constantly increasing - visual content. SentIMAGi will create a powerful brand monitoring and reputation management framework, exploiting multi-modal sentiment analysis methods and summariza-tion. The aim of the framework is to provide an efficient but complete view of the public senti-ment towards different aspects of a brand.

  • SPEEDD - Scalable ProactivE Event-Driven Decision making

    SPEEDD (Scalable ProactivE Event-Driven Decision making) will develop a system for proactive event-based decision-making: decisions will be triggered by forecasting events -whether they correspond to problems or opportunities- instead of reacting to them once they happen.
    The decisions and actions will be real-time, in the sense that they will be taken under tight time constraints, and require on-the-fly processing of "Big Data", ie extremely large amounts of noisy data storming from different geographical locations as well as historical data.

  • REVEAL - REVEALing hidden concepts in Social Media

    The world of media and communication is currently experiencing enormous disruptions: from one-way communication and word of mouth exchanges, we have moved to bi- or multi directional communication patterns.

  • SYNAISTHISI - Intelligent Networks for Data Collection and Processing for Energy Conservation

    The purpose of the "SYNAISTHISI" project is to research and build a system that can seamlessly integrate heterogeneous sensor, processing and actuator networks and provide a flexible yet extendable service layer that can translate such networks (devices, sensors, machines, humans, etc.) into reusable service components that are easily “weaved” into applications. For the scope of this project several application scenarios have been identified.

  • PREPARE - Innovative integrative tools and platforms to be prepared for radiological emergencies and post-accident response in Europe

    This project aims to close gaps that have been identified in nuclear and radiological preparedness following the first evaluation of the Fukushima disaster. It addresses the call Fission-2010-3.3.1: Update of emergency management and rehabilitation strategies and expertise in Europe.

  • POSCON - Positive Online Content and Services for Children in Europe

    With more and more children being online at a young age, concepts and ways to accompany and support them in their first and further steps on the internet are needed more than ever. One important keyword here is positive content and services – websites, online content, online environments and increasingly also apps where children can easily and safely enjoy the internet and mobile devices. This issue has been addressed on several levels before – on national level with initiatives bringing forward the production and promotion of positive content, and on European level e.g.

  • CLARIN-EL - CLARIN ATTIKI - Support and development of Greek partners for the participation in the European Research Infrastructure Consortia

    CLARIN-EL aims at:
    • designing and implementing the Research Infrastructure (creation of software for the storage and disposal of Language Resources and Technologies, conversion of Language Resources and Technologies aimed at interoperability, description / documentation of Language Resources and Technologies according to the agreed metadata schema, list of available Language Resources and Technologies etc.), by adopting international standards and best practices geared towards interoperability of resources and tools

  • C2LEARN - Creative Emotional Reasoning Computational Tools Fostering Co-Creativity in Learning Processes

    The C2Learn project aims to introduce an innovative digital gaming and social networking environment incorporating diverse tools, the use of which can foster co-creativity in learning processes in the context of both formal and informal educational settings.

  • SEMAGROW - Data intensive techniques to boost the real-time performance of global agricultural data infrastructures

    As the trend to open up data and provide them freely on the Internet intensifies, the opportunities to create added value by combining and cross-indexing heterogeneous data at a large scale increase. To seize these opportunities we need infrastructure that is not only efficient, real-time responsive and scalable but is also flexible and robust enough to welcome data in any schema and form and to transparently relegate and translate queries from a unifying end-point to the multitude of data services that make up the open data cloud.

  • BioASQ - A challenge on large-scale biomedical semantic indexing and question answering

    BioASQ will push for a solution to the information access problem of biomedical experts by setting up a challenge on biomedical semantic indexing and question answering (QA). Biomedical knowledge is dispersed in hundreds of heterogeneous knowledge sources and databases; many of them are connected on the Linked Open Data cloud. Biomedical experts, on the other hand, are in constant need of highly specialized information, which they cannot easily obtain. To address their needs, an information system needs to "understand'' the data and answer efficiently the experts' questions.

  • NOMAD - Policy Formulation and Validation through non moderated crowdsourcing

    The ability to leverage the vast amount of user-generated content for supporting governments in their political decisions requires new ICT tools that will be able to analyze and classify the opinions expressed on the informal Web, or stimulate responses, as well as to put data from sources as diverse as blogs, online opinion polls and government reports to an effective use.

  • USEFIL - Unobtrusive Smart Environments for Independent Living

    The number of elderly citizens in EU as well as the total number of seniors living alone is growing leading to increased demands placed on society’s care and medical services. Although ICT technologies can increase safety, independence and quality of life of elderly people while staying at home the adoption rates of such advancements show that these are still undesired by the majority of the population. USEFIL project intends to cope with this gap proposing advanced but affordable in-home unobtrusive monitoring and web communication solutions.

  • AVISPIRE - Audio-VIsual Speech Processing for Interaction in Realistic Environments

    AVISPIRE will work towards expanding the state-of-the-art in the topic of audio-visual speech processing from today’s "toy" examples to realistic human-computer interaction in difficult, realistic environments like the classroom, the automobile, multimedia streams of broadcasted news, and during meetings in smart rooms. Work will focus on both robust extraction of visual speech information, as well as its efficient fusion with the acoustic modality.

  • SYNC3 - Synergetic Content Creation and Communication

    SYNC3 will provide an intelligent framework for making more accessible the vast quantity of user comments on news issues. The project will structure the part of blogsphere that refers to running news stories, rendering it accessible, manageable and re-usable. The immediate target of SYNC3 is the news industry and social networks, but domains like commerce, tourism, e-science and business intelligence are likely to benefit from the resulting technology.

  • CASAM - Computer-Aided Semantic Annotation of Multimedia

    CASAM expects to facilitate the synergy of human and machine intelligence to significantly speed up the task of human-produced semantic annotation of multimedia content. The project will deal with the task of aggregating human and machine knowledge with the ultimate target of minimizing human involvement in the annotation procedure. Intelligent human-computer interaction is of central importance, and the concept of effort-optimized knowledge aggregation will be introduced. This as the task of reaching the desired result by requiring the least effort from the user.

  • OntoSum - Ontology Management and Use to Support Summarization

    The OntoSum project is funded by the Greek government and supports three PhD students working on the following subjects:

    The goal of the AMINESS project is to contribute in the safety, management and monitoring of the sea environment and the Aegean Sea in particular. Reducing the possibility of ship accidents in the Aegean Sea is important to all economic, environmental, and cultural sectors of Greece. Oil spill cleanups can cost over 1 billion Euros, whereas accidents involving water soluble cargos would result in irrevocable changes to the Aegean ecosystem. Despite an increase in traffic, there are no national-level monitoring policies and ships formulate routes according to their best judgment.

  • CPS - Medium: A Novel Human Centric CPS to Improve Motor/Cognitive Assessment and Enable Adaptive Rehabilitation

    The objective of this research is to develop methods and tools for a multimodal and multi-sensor assessment and rehabilitation game system called CPLAY for children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). CPLAY collects and processes multiple types of stimulation and performance data while a child is playing. Its core has a touch-screen programmable game that has various metrics to measure delay of response, score, stamina/duration, accuracy of motor/hand motion.

  • PASCAL 2 - Pattern Analysis, Statistical Modelling and Computational Learning

    PASCAL is a Network of Excellence funded by the European Union. It has established a distributed institute that brings together researchers and students across Europe, and is now reaching out to countries all over the world. PASCAL is developing the expertise and scientific results that will help create new technologies such as intelligent interfaces and adaptive cognitive systems. To achieve this, it supports and encourages collaboration between experts in Machine Learning, Statistics and Optimization. It also promotes the use of machine learning in many relevant application domains.

  • PRONTO - Event Recognition for Intelligent Resource Management

    PRONTO will offer real-time, knowledge-led support for decision-makers in sectors characterised by large volumes of multi-source, multi-format data. The project introduces a highly synergetic approach to intelligent resource management by combining the research areas of information extraction from sensor data, information extraction from audio and text, and event recognition. This approach is applicable to a wide range of domains, where resource management is needed, and the PRONTO technology will be tested in two such domains: emergency rescue operations and city transport management.

  • SERVIVE - Service Oriented Intelligent Value Adding Network for Clothing-SMEs embarking in Mass-Customisation

    In the next few years the small-scale success stories of the early adaptors can and should be used as the foundation for the implementation of Mass Customisation in Fashion throughout Europe on a wide and large scale. SERVIVE aims to be the launching platform enabling large-scale implementation of Mass Customisation in the European Fashion Domain.By bringing together all the key players of the garment production process (designers, industry, customers), SERVIVE aims at the mass customization and personalization of the process.

  • QUATRO Plus - Content Labels for User Empowerment

    Traditional quality labels and trustmarks are logos that are visible to humans but undetectable by machines. The original 2-year QUATRO project identified a demand for and the usefulness of interoperable, machine-readable quality labels; created a platform for their delivery and authentication; and developed two end-user tools. QUATRO Plus seeks to build on the work done and to extend its scope significantly, notably by allowing users to contribute to both the creation of labels and the trust that other users may put in them.

  • INDIGO - Interaction with Personality and Dialogue Enabled Robots

    INDIGO aims to develop human-robot communication technology for intelligent mobile robots that operate and serve tasks in populated environments. In doing so, the project will involve technologies from various sectors, and will attempt to introduce advances in respective areas, i.e. natural language interaction, autonomous navigation, visual perception, dialogue systems, and virtual emotions.

    DELTIO aims to develop new methods to represent, analyse and extract semantic information for multimedia content management, emphasizing on TV news.

  • BOEMIE - Bootstrapping Ontology Evolution with Multimedia Information Extraction

    The BOEMIE project proposes a bootstrapping approach to knowledge acquisition, which uses multimedia ontologies for fused extraction of semantics from multiple modalities, and feeds back the extracted information, aiming to automate the ontology evolution process. BOEMIE methodology BOEMIE advocates an ontology-driven multimedia content analysis (semantics extraction from images, video, text, audio/speech) through a novel synergistic method that combines multimedia extraction and ontology evolution in a bootstrapping fashion.

  • MedIEQ - Quality Labelling of Medical Web Content using Multilingual Information Extraction

    Based upon state-of-the-art technology in the areas of web crawling and spidering, multilingual information extraction, semantic resources and quality labelling, MedIEQ will pave the way towards the automation of quality labelling process in medical web sites. MedIEQ will deliver tools that crawl the Web to locate medical web sites in seven different European languages (Spanish, Catalan, German, English, Greek, Czech, and Finnish) in order to verify their content using a set of machine readable quality criteria.

  • KDubiq - A Blueprint for Ubiquitous Knowledge Discovery Systems

    This multi-disciplinary approach constitutes a paradigm shift for the field of knowledge discovery since the idea of a standalone (desktop or workstation) analysis tool is abandoned in favour of process integrated, distributed and autonomous analysis systems. Work done in this area merely scratches the surface, is dispersed among several communities, and in a very early stage. Integration of the various sub-areas involves considerable risk.

  • SHARE - Mobile support for rescue forces, integrating multiple modes of interaction

    SHARE aims to develop a new type of advanced mobile service, called Push-To-Share, to support ?mobile content sharing? by the participants of field operational teams, such as fire rescue forces. Push-To-Share is an innovative extension of the commonly used Push-To-Talk technology and provides a new concept for simple ways of complex communication, combining an easy-to-use interface with a comfortable delivery of multimedia content.

  • QUATRO - Quality Assurance and Content Description

    The Quatro project is applying semantic web technologies to trust-mark schemes and quality labels. Drawing on past and original research, the project has defined a vocabulary that can be used by any trust-mark scheme and a technical platform to deliver the trust-marks in a format that can be processed by semantic web agents.

  • KT-DIGICULT-BG - Knowledge Transfer for Digitisation of Cultural and Scientific Heritage in Bulgaria (KT-DIGICULT-BG)

    The objective of this project is the transfer of know-how, from European institutions that are active in the digitization processing and presentation of monuments of cultural heritage with final aim the creation of a digitisation centre in Bulgaria. NCSR Demokritos is one of these institutions and will transfer its knowhow on digitization and processing of old manuscripts. The work includes exchanges between European countries and Bulgaria so that we achieve an optimal transfer of know-how for the fulfilment of this objective.

  • PRAXE - 01 PRAXE 127: e-Content Analysis

    The project aimed at preparing the commercial exploitation of our on-line content analysis technology. Combining techniques from the area of Artificial Intelligence (information extraction from multiple media, machine learning), through a carefully designed training process, it produces automatically models for filtering and semantic annotating documents.

  • SCOFI - Filtering the Internet by use of a Smart card

    SCOFI developed a system for filtering web pages containing harmful content for children. The system is based on smart cards technology and exploits techniques for multimedia content analysis.

  • SIFT - Solution for Internet Content Filtering

    Development of a platform based system that enables to integration of different filters according to the content rating system established by the Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA). Filterix is one of the filters that was examined in this platform.

  • WebC-MINE - WebC-MINE: Web usage mining from proxy/cache server logs

    Development of technology for processing large-scale usage data collected by Internet Service Providers (ISP), in order to discover knowledge from these data. This knowledge is used to model the ISP users.

  • CROSSMARC - CROSS-lingual Multi-Agent Retail Comparison

    Development of technology for web content analysis. CROSSMARC technology was examined in four languages (Greek, English, Italian, and French), and two application domains (laptop offers, job offers). CROSSMARC developed an infrastructure that facilitates the integration of new tools and the adaptation to new domains.

  • M-PIRO - M-PIRO Multilingual Personalised Information Object

    The M-PIRO project developed state of the art techniques and tools in natural language generation, speech synthesis, user modelling, and their interaction with adaptive hypermedia and virtual reality systems. The project built on existing museum collection information database systems, and utilised the information management and design expertise from the museum partners. The M-PIRO software creates descriptions of museum artefacts automatically, using information stored in a database. Children, adults and experts all receive slightly different, personalised, descriptions.

  • AInet - Human Network on Artificial Intelligence

    AInet was a network of research organizations focusing on artificial Intelligence. Seminars and workshops were organized with the aim to train and inform students and professionals on various aspects of these technologies.

    KOINOTITES (transliteration of the Greek word for Communities) was a project funded internally by NCSR ?Demokritos? to study the effect of personalization in digital libraries. In the course of the project, unsupervised machine learning methods were evaluated on the task of constructing models for communities of users with common interests and/or common navigational behavior in the site of a digital library.

  • MITOS - Document filtering, information extraction and data-mining applied to financial news (MITOS)

    MITOS addressed the problem of information overload by developing a system able to filter and extract information from electronic news articles, as well as to discover new knowledge implicitly stored in databases. The system was tested with news and data from the Greek financial market.

    In GIE NCSR and Sheffield worked for the development of a prototype named entity recogniser for the Greek language and for the domain of management succession events. They also developed tools to facilitate the customisation of named entity recognition in new domains for both English and Greek languages.

  • Geonickel - Integrated technologies for mineral exploration; Pilot project for Nickel ore deposits

    Among the most promising results of the project were: GEOSIS, an information system tailored to the needs of the expert geo-scientist, providing support through all the stages of Nickel exploration, ANNGIE: A prototype software tool, developed to help automate the classification of lithological regions, the identification of mineral alteration zones and the detection of geological lineaments from multisource data.

  • ECRAN - Extraction of Content : Research at Near Market

    ECRAN advances a key research technology and is a first step towards the personal newspaper and the active e¬mail system, long awaited to deal with information overload on citizens with electronic access.

  • GLOSSASOFT - Methods and Guidelines for Interlinguality in Software Constraction

    The objectives of the project were

    • to produce guidelines for the internationalization of new and existing software applications,
    • to produce guidelines, methods and to specify tools for the localization of internationalized software applications,
    • to apply these results on several case studies,

    The Naval Architecture Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in cooperation with the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National Center for Scientific Research (NCSR) "Demokritos" have developed an expert system for ship loading. This expert system is designed specifically for liquid cargo combinations of a very difficult type (product or chemical carriers). The ELS is the most sophisticated software of its kind, and runs on Unix workstations of the new RISC generation.
