The Research Ethics Committee of NCSR Demokritos organised a conference titled Artificial Intelligence: Applications and Ethical Challenges, on Wednesday 23 March 2022. The event took place physically at the Conference Centre of NCSR Demokritos.

The keynote speaker of the conference was John Tasioulas, Professor of Ethics and Legal Philosophy, Director of the Institute for Ethics in AI, University of Oxford with his speech titled Towards a humanistic ethics of AI.
The event was hosted by the Director and Chairman of the Board at NSCR Demokritos, Dr George Nounesis, Mr Christos Dimas, Deputy Minister for Research and Technology and Mr Isidoros Karatzas, Head of Ethics Sector, European Commission DG Research & Innovation attended the event. The vice-President and Director of the Institute of Information and Telecommunications, Dr Vangelis Karkaletsis addressed also the conference, emphasising the work that is conducted in the field of Artificial Intelligence in the Institute.

Speaker Bios
John Tasioulas is Professor of Ethics and Legal Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford, and Director of the Institute for Ethics in AI.
He was born in Australia, his parents having emigrated from Greece in the early 1960s. He received degrees in philosophy and law from the University of Melbourne and studied as a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford where he completed a D.Phil on moral relativism under the supervision of Joseph Raz.
He was a Reader in Moral and Legal Philosophy at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford (1998-2010), Quain Professor of Jurisprudence in the Faculty of Laws, University College London (2011-14), and Yeoh Professor of Politics, Philosophy and Law and Director of the Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy, and Law at the Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London (2014-2020). He has held visiting positions at the Australian National University, the University of Chicago, Harvard University, and the University of Melbourne. His recent writings focus on philosophical issues regarding punishment, human rights and international law. He is the co-editor of The Philosophy of International Law (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2010) and the editor of The Cambridge Companion to the Philosophy of Law (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2020).
Elias Nassiopoulos is the founder and Managing Director of Green Innovation & Vehicle Engineering, as well as the Executive Director at Petros Petropoulos Innovation Business Unit. He holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from the Polytechnic School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Master and PhD degrees from the University of Cranfield, UK. Dr Nassiopoulos has been working for years in the automotive and motorsport sector, in world class facilities where he collaborated and led some of the best engineering talents. He has Since 2016 he founded GIVE and has since successfully managed several R&D projects for prestigious automotive clients and research collaborations, steering his team to a steady growth, with two successfully funding rounds and deals of several millions. With his team they developed several innovative products in the fields of mobility and micro-mobility such as project “ilektra” the first fully customizable smart two-wheeler EV, autonomous UAVs, battery management systems, and, several more for the automotive industry, the sustainability sector, and more.
Elias has worked at Nissan (Nissan Technical Centre of Europe – NTCE) as a suspension engineering and as a structural analyst in Formula 1 (Force India) in UK. Later he has worked as a senior analyst at Prodrive, responsible to build and lead the composite analysis group of the company and link the engineering and manufacturing departments. Elias has an experience of 10+ years in the area of finite elements, structural analysis, optimisation & lightweight materials, and a wide range of analysis methods from heat transfer and linear-static, to transient, dynamic (crash), implicit & explicit. Through his career so far, he had the chance to work in some highly innovative projects, most in the automotive & motorsport sector, and get the experience from both the academic and the industrial engineering approach. He is also a Chartered Engineer in the UK. His role and efforts focus on managing the talent and create the circumstances for his team to be inspired and operate in their best of abilities, with the vision to develop technologies and engineer products that shape the way we move and how we think of sustainability the future.
Ιrini Fundulaki is Principal Researcher of the Information Systems Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science, FORTH. She is also the Manager of the W3C Greece Office. She has a Bachelor and Master’s Degree from the Department of Computer Science, University of Crete, and a PhD Degree in Computer Science from the Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers in Paris, France in January 2003. During her PhD, she was a member of the Verso Database Group of the Insitut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique (INRIA). After her PhD, she held a PostDoc position and then became a Member of Technical Staff at the Network Data and Services Research Department in Bell Laboratories of Lucent Technologies. She subsequently moved to the Database Group of the School of Informatics of the University of Edinburgh where she held a Research Fellow Position.
Her research interests are in the area of Web Data Management and more specifically, on Provenance Models for RDF Data, Storage and Indexing Schemes for RDF Provenance, Storage, Indexing and Scalable RDF Query Processing, Access Control for RDF and XML Data, XML Full Text Search with a focus on Personalization, XML Data Integration, User Profile Data Management and Identity Management. She has published a number of scientific articles that have been widely cited and she has served on the Program Committee of numerous international conferences, journals and workshops. She has acted as the Program Chair of the International Workshop on Web Information and Data Management in 2006 and 2007. She is the Chair of the Undergraduate Research Poster Competition for SIGMOD 2011 International Conference, the leading venue for database researchers.
Prodromos Tsiavos is the Head of Digital Development and Innovation at the Onassis Group and is a legal and policy counsel for Athena Research Centre and OpenAIRE. He has served as the Chair of the Administrative Council of the Greek Industrial Property Organisation (OBI) and has founded the Hellenic Industrial Property Academy. He has over 150 publications and talks on legal and business aspects of e-government, Ethics by Design, open technologies, digital content and IPR and innovation policy and strategy. Prodromos is the director of the Institute of IPR and Innovation at the European Public Law Organisation and the Chair of the Supervisory Board of the European Patent Academy (EPA). He is currently teaching AI Law and Ethics at the National Technical University of Athens and at the Athens University of Economics and Business.
Marina Markellou is a Greek lawyer, admitted to practice in 2003, and she has worked in France and Greece in various positions relating to the interpretation and application of intellectual property law. She is also a recent post-doctoral fellow grant of University of Poitiers, where she has conducted for 6 months a post-doc research project on “ Appropriation Art from an art historical, sociological and legal perspective in Europe and in USA”, at the laboratory of CeCOJI under the supervision of Marie Cornu. This project supplemented her legal education already received from University of Montpellier I (PhD on “Copyright Contracts – a comparative analysis under German, French and Greek Copyright Law”) and Master 2 in Business Law focusing on Intellectual Property Law, Contracts, Competition Law and Personal Data Law) and the University of Thessaloniki (Bachelor of Laws). Her primary professional interests concern intellectual property (Copyright, Trademarks, Patents) and cultural heritage law. Member of the CECOJI CNRS of France and of the Greek group of the International Literal and Artistic Association (ALAI), she often participates as a legal expert in many European programs (CIHA conference 2012, ICIL conferences 2013, 2011, 2010, 2009, COUNTER workshop project 2009/IDABC project 2008). She is an external ethics advisor at the Institute of Telecommunications and Informatics of NCSR Demokritos. She also works at various Universities in Greece and in Cyprus where she teaches Competition Law, Intellectual Property Law, Culture Heritage Law. She speaks French, English and Spanish.
Yannis Bassiakos is a geologist and chronologist of the University of Athens. He has got specialization on ancient mining/metallurgy and on Fission Tracks dating in the Max-Planck-Institute for Nuclear Physics (Heidelberg/Germany) and in the Geology Dept of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy/USA). During the first 7-years-period of his occupation at NCSR “Demokritos” dealt with the ‘Uranium Exploration Project’, thus worked in all geographic and geological provinces of Greece as wall as in the field of various C.-W. European and Mediterranean countries. After been occupied, for some decades, with “good practice” indicated in the Cultural/Technological Heritage and Ancient Landscape valorisation and sustaining, he sets as priority a pertinent contribution to the NCSR “D” Research Ethics Committee (REC), in which he participates as an alternate member. Y.B. retired from “Demokritos” in 31 December 2016 and since 2018 he became emeritus researcher of the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (INN). Since 2008 he acts as Editor-in-Chief for the archaeometric Journal “Archaeological and Anthropological Science”, IF 2.41.
Maria Dagioglou studied Electrical and Computer Engineering (Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, 2007). She holds a MSc in Biomedical Engineering (TU Delft, the Netherlands, 2010) and a PhD in Psychology (University of Birmingham, UK, 2014). During her PhD, she was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Predictive Sensory Motor (PRISM) Lab (School of Psychology,UoB, UK) where she studied human motor control and learning. Since April 2014, she is a research associate at the National Centre of Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’ (NCSR-D), participating at Roboskel, the robotics activity of the Software and Knowledge Engineering Lab in the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT), assuming team member roles in national and EU projects. In 2018, she received a 3-year Stavros Niarchos Foundation industrial post-doc fellowship for work on robotic applications for human-robot collaboration at shared working spaces. She also participates in the working group of IIT for applying ethical and trustworthy AI. Her research interests include the development of AI methods, as well as the understanding of human behavior for safe, explainable and fluent Human-Robot Collaboration.
