The BioHIT group of SKEL | The AI Lab organised an online talk on Tuesday 2 November at 16.00 with invited speaker Dr Vasileios Stathias, entitled Leveraging big data & AI for the transformation of cancer research and drug discovery.
Short description
The recent advances in sequencing and high-throughput technologies have enabled the generation of an unprecedented amount of biomedical data and have provided the unique opportunity to accelerate cancer research through the adoption of big data, artificial intelligence, and data science methodologies. This talk will highlight the implementation of state-of-the-art strategies for the FAIR management, and reproducible analysis of large-scale cancer studies, together with the development of novel precision medicine approaches by leveraging computational biology, drug discovery, and AI.
Speaker Bio
Vasileios Stathias is a Lead Data Scientist at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology at the University of Miami. Vasileios is leading the development of a multi-omics data portal for the FAIR management, automated processing, and intuitive analysis of biomedical research data generated at the cancer center. Furthermore, his research focuses on advancing precision medicine and drug discovery by applying state-of-the-art machine learning and computational biology approaches to large-scale multi-omics, and perturbation-response datasets. Vasileios is currently leading projects in multiple interdisciplinary research collaborations and consortia including the NIH LINCS (Library of Integrated Network-Based Cellular Signatures) and the NCI CPTAC (Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium). For his B.Sc. degree, Vasileios attended the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Democritus University of Thrace in Alexandroupoli and obtained his Ph.D. degree in the Department of Human Genetics and Genomics at the University of Miami.
