The DICE group, part of the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications at NCSR “Demokritos”, achieved first place in the Field of Research Classification shared task, which was organized as part of the NSLP 2025 workshop, a session held within the ESWC 2025 conference.

Representing the team, researcher Kostas Bougiatiotis participated in the shared task, which focused on the automatic classification of scientific publications into standardized Fields of Research (FoR) categories. The task aimed to support improved research analytics, metadata enrichment, and scientific knowledge organization.

To address this challenge, the team designed a two-step classification method. The first step identifies the most likely labels using a text-based similarity search. Then, a Large Language Model (LLM) is used to refine the candidate label set and ensure that the final selections follow the appropriate hierarchical structure of the FoR taxonomy. This approach led to high classification accuracy and ultimately secured the top spot in the competition.

The NSLP workshop will take place during the ESWC 2025 conference, which was held from 1 to 5 June 2025 in Portorož, Slovenia. Kostas Bougiatiotis attended the event in person to present the team’s work.

His participation is supported by the SIMPATHIC project, and this achievement further highlights the excellence and international visibility of the research conducted at IIT.
