Evaluation results for Greek Research Institutes presented at event in NCSR Demokritos

During a full day event that took place at NCSR Demokritos campus on Wednesday 20 February 2023, the first results and statistical data of the Greek Research Institutes’ evaluation as well as the emerging areas of excellence, were presented and analysed to the research community at the premises of the NCSR-Demokritos.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Development and Investments, represented by the Deputy Minister, Christos Dimas, the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GGEK), represented by the General Secretary, Athanasios Kyriazis, and the National Council for Research Technology and Innovation (ESETEK), represented by the President and Emeritus Professor Spyros Artavanis-Tsakonas and the council’s members.

The new evaluation process organized by ESETEK and GGEK and realised by expert committees under the supervision of ESETEK, ascertains whether research centers, researchers, research projects, studies, or programs are characterized by high scientific quality and reciprocity towards society. Additionally, the whole process was for the first time supported by the award-winning digital platform RIview developed by the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunication (IIT) of NCSR-Demokritos in collaboration with GGEK and ESETEK. The platform allows the possibility to extract statistics on the funding, human resources, and infrastructure of the research institutes and graphic presentations of the data.

In the frame of the event, the director of the IIT, Vangelis Karkaletsis noticed that the new evaluation process focuses on a better understanding of the institutes’ needs and supports the design of research policies. He also highlighted that more than 200 researchers and academics from all over the world participated in the procedure, while for the first time, separate committees were appointed to evaluate each institute and its research groups. He finally added that the next step for the completion of the process is the evaluation of the research centers, which will begin soon.
