The AI Ethics conference The Lyceum Project: AI Ethics with Aristotle was held at the Athens Conservatoire and Aristotle’s Lyceum on June 20th, 2024.

Over 440 participants from across academic disciplines, business, healthcare, policy and politics as well as interested citizens, all united in exploring Aristotle’s philosophy and its implications for the ethical development of artificial intelligence.

The programme included philosophers’ and practitioners’ panels, early career researchers’ parallel sessions, as well as a special evening event on the grounds of Aristotle’s Lyceum.

Furthermore, the conference closed with the address of the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Among the participants were Prof. John Tasioulas, moral and legal philosopher, Prof. Josiah Ober, the Constantine Mitsotakis Chair in the School of Humanities and Sciences, George Nounesis, Director and Chairman of the Board of NCSR “Demokritos”, Vangelis Karkaletsis, Director at the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications at “NCSR Demokritos” and Dr Lida Arnellou, Postdoctoral Researcher at NCSR “Demokritos” and Curator of AiTHERION.

A highlight of the event was the unveiling of the new white paper from the Institute for Ethics in AI: “Lyceum Project: AI Ethics with Aristotle” authored by Professors Josiah Ober and John Tasioulas.

The Lyceum Project concluded with an evening programme, held on the grounds of the Lyceum of Aristotle, consisting of an interdisciplinary youth dialogue on the issues that have been discussed during the day and a dance project presented by the Dance Students of the Athens Conservatoire and Stylianos Tsatsos; an artistic reflection on the democratic process itself, on being part of a group as an individual and on the dynamic relationship between singular decisions and the choices of the many.
