NCSR Demokritos and Athens International Airport (AIA) launch a new collaboration, aiming in the exploitation of research results and innovative applications of common interest, in real-world aerospace environment. In the framework of this collaboration, the first joint action is in the field of robotic technology combined with artificial intelligence technology, developed at the NCSR ‘D’ Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT).
AIA owns two Pepper robots, which have already been used in the main terminal area, providing information on both English and Chinese concerning airport flights and stores, since January 2019. The two Pepper’s have proved extremely popular with passengers and airport visitors, winning the love of younger ones.
On Wednesday, May 15th, Athens International Airport gave Pepper, the airport robot, to the researchers of IIT, for … a good cause! As part of this collaboration, researchers at the IIT’s SKEL Lab developed a new dialogue system for Pepper with the integration of artificial intelligence. The new interactive system is expected to improve Pepper’s interactivity, enabling the understanding of additional questions about Athens airport operation and services and offering interesting dialogs for visitors. Pepper’s new function was presented for the first time at the 84th Thessaloniki International Fair at the Ministry of Development and Investments / GSRT / NCSR “Demokritos” Pavilion and then at the “Researcher’s Night” on September 27.
