In 2019 NCSR Demokritos became the first Research Center in Greece to receive funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB). With a total budget of € 48.3 Million, the project involves the construction of four new buildings and the renovation of seven existing buildings helping toward creating a “smart, autonomous and green campus” ready to meet the challenges of the exponential changes in Research and Technology.

Construction work will start with the new smart building of the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications, the first of the buildings to be built with a total area covering 3,573m² and a budget rising to 6.8 M€. This building will serve the growing needs of the Institute concerning research, innovation, education, networking, exhibitions and the dissemination of research results. It will also provide the necessary lab spaces to develop, test and exhibit applications, hosting approximately 150 people. The existing building infrastructure of IIT, which now stands at 1,100 m2, will also undergo a considerable renovation as part of the EIB funding, with a budget of 2.2 M€.

In 24 January 2020, the European Investment Bank confirmed its support for the EUR 48 million expansion and modernisation of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, in a ceremony that took place in the Center’s premises. The project has also benefited from the support of InnovFin Advisory, one of the InnovFin tools, which provided Demokritos with advice to improve its access to finance.
