NCSR “Demokritos” organizes a panel discussion titled “The Greek Data story: Current state and future plans for open government data and applications”, in the context of the workshop “Your Data Stories Project: Finding, Analysing & Visualising Open Data”, which is part of the 4th Hellenic Forum for Science Technology and Innovation (http://events.demokritos.gr/) and the Demokritos Summer School 2016. The panel discussion will take place at the central amphitheater of NCSR “Demokritos”, on Monday 11 July 2016 between 09:30 – 12:30.
A number of experts originating from different areas will give short talks aiming to give the audience a better picture regarding the current situation, existing problems as well as opportunities and prospects regarding entrepreneurship and innovation. Discussion with the audience will follow.

Panel coordinator: Mr. Yannis Rizopoulos (Journalist/Host, Tech Talks Central)
Yannis Rizopoulos studied Electronics, but made his career in the Media sector, where he has been active for 40+ years. He has worked for “Kathimerini” (as a member, then head of Foreign Desk), “Naftemporiki” and “Sunday Eleftherotypia” newspapers, focusing on Technology and Innovation issues. He served as editor-in-chief or member of the staff in dozens of magazines on a wide area of subjects, has many years of radio and TV experience and has also served as moderator in numerous conferences and congresses. For six years, he was the editor of the specialized section Technologein at the popular portal “Pathfinder”, where he produced more than 110 multimedia documentaries on innovative research, tech apps and best practices. Nowadays he contributes to Smart Press events and sites (www.infocom.gr) and is a host at TTC Web Radio (www.techtalkscentral.com). He is a member of the Journalist Union of Athens Daily Newspapers (ΕΣΗΕΑ) and he is also a member of the Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Education Committee at the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce, in Athens.
Dr. Vangelis Karkaletsis (Research Director, SKEL Laboratory, IIT, NCSR Demokritos)
Vangelis Karkaletsis is the head of the Software and Knowledge Engineering Laboratory (SKEL) of the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications at NCSR “Demokritos”, and responsible for the Institute’s educational activities. His research interests are in the areas of content analysis, human-machine interfaces, ontology engineering. He is scientific manager of the H2020 project Your Data Stories (http://yourdatastories.eu/) on the analysis of open governmental data and their linking to social web. He is also site manager for the H2020 Big Data Europe project (https://www.big-data-europe.eu/) for the development of a Big Data Integrator platform, and coordinator of the H2020 Radio project (http://radio-project.eu/) on the use of robots in assisted living environments. He has organised international workshops, conferences, summer schools. He teaches for many years at post-graduate courses on language and knowledge technologies.
Mrs. Anna Triantafillou (Deputy Head, Innovation Lab, ATC)
Anna Triantafillou is working as the Deputy Head of ATC’s Innovation Lab. She is a Master degree holder in Organisational Behaviour & HR Management and a BSc Degree holder in Management & Systems Science from City University of London. Currently she is a PhD candidate in the field of Management Information Systems at the Department of Information and Communication Systems, University of the Aegean. She has worked as a Researcher for the City University, of London. She has more than 14 years of professional experience in the domain of Information Services as a Project Coordinator / Manager of European and National R&D projects. Her research interests’ lie in the fields of Systems Analysis, Enterprise level Modelling, eGovernment & eBusiness applications. She has also extensive experience in the analysis and implementation of IT systems. Mrs. Triantafillou has been the Project Coordinators of the YOURDATASTORIES, CROSSOVER, OURSPACE, eMPOWER, MOMENTUM, LEX-IS, WEB-DEP.
Dr. Michalis Vafopoulos (Researcher, IIT, NCSR “Demokritos”)
Michalis Vafopoulos is an affiliated researcher at the Software & Knowledge Engineering Laboratory (SKEL) of the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications of the NCSR “Demokritos”. His research and speeches are focused on Web economics and business, economic networks, linked open data, Web philosophy and Web literacy. In 2010 initiated PublicSpending.net which interconnects and analyses more than 1.5 trillion euros of global public expenditure. In 2011 published the monography “The Web Economy: Goods, Users, Models, and Policies” which serves as a textbook in postgraduate studies. The next year introduced “Being, Space, and Time on the Web” in WWW conference and the Metaphilosophy journal. In 2014 addressed the keynote in Web Economy Festival and in 2015 has been elected as a member of the Board in the Greek Free/Open Source Software Society and director of Open Data Institute Athens. He has written the bestselling book «Living with Web» (in Greek), which presents both the social and technical aspects of the Web as an integrated part of everyday life. Today, in the context of YourDataStories and BigDataEurope H2020 projects, he is working on the notion and engineering of Linked Open Economy as a top-level conceptualization that interlinks the major economic open data.
Dr. Aris Kotsakis (Senior Advisor to the Secretary General for PUBLIC REVENUE at Ministry of Finance, Hellenic Republic)

Mr. Theodoros Karounos (Vice-president of the Board of Directors, GFOSS)
Theodoros Karounos completed the School of Contemporary studies of the City University of New York in 1979, received his B.Sc. in Computer Science in 1983 and the M.Sc. Degree in Information & Communication Systems from Polytechnic University, New York in 1985. From 1984 to 1987 he was employed by IBM, New York, USA, as a Systems Analyst involved in the adaptation and testing of pre-commercial network management tools and the operation of the IBM international corporate data network. From 1987 to 1990 he was a coordinator for systems support and R&D at the Informatics Development Agency of the Greek Ministry of Presidency and Special Advisor for Informatics to the Greek Minister of the Interior. From 1990 onwards he has been actively involved with the National Technical University of Athens, in various posts including managing the R&D activities of the Network and Optimal Design Laboratory – NETMODE, acting as Technical Manager of the telecommunications network of NTUA, and the implementation of GRNET and where he acted as technical co-ordinator. He also represented NTUA at the GUNET policy committee as well as being a member of its technical committee. He has also acted as advisor to the Ministries of Development and Education on information and communication technologies, as well as to the Prime Minister, and e-government coordinator for Greece. He also was the president of the Board of Directors of the Greek Free Open Source Software Society (GFOSS) and a board member of NERIT SA. Currently he is the vice- president of the Board of Directors of the GFOSS.
Mr. Christos J. Smyrnios (Public Sector Sales Manager, Unisystems S.A.)
Christos J. Smyrnios was born in Athens and studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Patras specializing in Computerized Automatic Control Systems. He has worked in several IT companies. From 1990 joined Group Quest, at first at the Technical Department and then as Business Development Manager with responsibility for Development New IT Solutions and Market Analysis for Custom Computing Solutions (Products and Services), combined with organization’s direct sales. After 2003 he is the Sales Manager for the Public Sector Info-Quest AEBE/ Unisystems SA as responsible for Business Development in Public Sector with a certain target and clientele and responsibility to participate in tenders. Responsible for the overall management of the clients in the Public Sector and in biding and contracting projects like as Ermis, Taxisnet, ICISnet, MoF MIS, Cadastre, IKA Social Security, and other. He speaks English, German and basic Italian and has participated in many exhibitions and conferences. He has certifications in Cisco, Microsoft and Oracle.
Mr. Nikos Michalopoulos (General Director, General Directorate of Administrative Reforms and E-Governance)
Nikos Michalopoulos is General Director on General Directorate of Administrative Reforms and E-Governance. He has the responsibility to organize, diffuse and monitor the e-gov Public Policy across Greek Public Administration to coordinate the project of digital policy interconnection, re-use of information and open data. In addition to the above he is the representative to the monitor committee of the Programmatic Senior 2014-2020. He holds a Ph.D. degree on Public Administration from the University of Athens and a Master degree on Public Administration from Liverpool University. He was researcher at the National School of Public Administration (in Greece) and expert on Organization and Training at the Hellenic Agency of Local Authorities and Development. He is affiliated with the National School of Public Health, with the National School of Public Administration, with the Interbalkan Institute of Public Administration and with the National School of Security. He is member of EUPAN and member of the Board of Governors, EIPA. He publishes mainly in public administration, public management and knowledge management Journals, International Journal of Public Administration, Chinese Review of Public Administration, International Journal of Learning and Intellectual Capital, e-Journal of International Public Management Review and to International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management.
Mr. George Karamanolis (Chief Technical Officer/Chief Information Officer, Crowdpolicy)
George Karamanolis has a strong presence in the ICT & Project Management ecosystem, serving for more than 10 years in high and C-level positions both in the private and public sector. He is currently the co-founder and CTO/CIO of Crowdpolicy, which specializes in the design, development and implementation of CrowdSourcing and CrowdFunding initiatives and platforms, bridging the gap between organizations and the crowd. He has been involved in a wide range of organizations, institutions and startups in Greece and abroad. During 2009-2012, George has coordinated the implementation of Major Transparency (Clarity, diavgeia.gov.gr/en), e-government and other projects for the Greek Government. He was member of the Scientific Committee for the Crowdsourcing Platform “labs.opengov” and the Organizational Committee for the Digital Greece 2020 EU Agenda and scientific advisor of GFOSS (Greek Free / Open Source Software Society). He was member of the board at the Internet Investors Association, an NGO promoting corporate governance and transparency activities for Greek listed companies. Also, he was Scientific Advisor of the “Information Society and the Knowledge-based Economy” group at the National and Technical University of Athens. George holds a B.Sc. in Informatics and a M.Sc. in Information Systems from the Athens University of Economics and Business. His main interests include Open Data and Open Government, Project Management, ICT and CrowdX initiatives in a global context.
Mrs. Maria Markou, (Managing Director, NonPaperGov / Egritos Group – Synergasia)
Maria Markou is the Managing Director of Egritos Group – Synergasia and responsible for coordinating IT projects and developing strategic plans. She holds an M.Sc. Degree on Computer Engineering from the University of Thessaly and an B.Sc. in Computer Science from the Polytechnic University of Berlin. She has more than 15 years of professional experience in the domain of IT as Project Manager. She worked also as evaluator in ICT4Growth and H2020 proposals. In her free time she enjoys research as a PhD candidate in the University of Thessaly with main interests data mining, content analysis and author profiling.
