For the first time last year, the non-profit organisation Science For You (SciFY) launched an innovative program to train individuals with autism and mental health conditions in artificial intelligence (AI), with the goal of supporting their employment in the tech sector. This year, the initiative has expanded to include people with mobility impairments.
The program titled “People with Disabilities as AI Pioneers” begins by training caregivers and representatives of the participants, who then transfer the knowledge to the beneficiaries. One of the trainees this year is activist Panagiotis Pitsiniagas, who uses a wheelchair and has been advocating for the rights of people with disabilities.
Panagiotis highlighted both the practical barriers and social stereotypes that prevent people with disabilities from entering the workforce in Greece, including inaccessible infrastructure and biased employer perceptions. He emphasised how meaningful it is for people with disabilities to gain a sense of purpose and identity through work.
The training focuses on AI data annotation, a vital part of AI development, which involves labeling data (e.g., classifying images, sounds, or text). This kind of remote digital work is ideal for people with mobility limitations, as it can be done from home and does not require relocation.
Last year’s pilot showed encouraging results: individuals with high-functioning autism and mental health conditions completed training with increasing independence and satisfaction. This year, around 30 new participants and a broader range of support organisations are involved. The program also seeks to build bridges with potential employers and research groups in Greece and abroad.
As SciFY co-founder, IIT Researcher Dr George Giannakopoulos noted, “This effort not only empowers people with disabilities but also contributes to the democratisation of AI systems by including diverse data contributors.”
The project is supported by the Ioannis S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and METLEN.
