The Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications, in the context of the CHANGER project, hosted invited speaker Dr. Michalis Kritikos, Policy Analyst at the Ethics and Integrity Sector of the European Commission (DG-RTD) for an online talk titled Designing Ethical and Trustworthy AI research policies at EU level on Thursday 30 May 2024, at 12.00pm, Athens time.
About the talk: The presentation will shed light on the importance of developing a specific, distinct framework for the assessment of ethics and value integration in the field of artificial intelligence to enable the development of a human-centered and trustworthy approach at a pan-European level. For this purpose, the actions to create a first set of specialized guidelines will be presented as well as the wider efforts of the European Union to formulate a targeted policy in this area.
Given the dynamic nature of this technology, the talk will focus on the particular needs for guidance, education, training and development of new methods of monitoring these systems. In addition, the challenges associated with the upcoming adoption of the EU law on artificial intelligence, its potential impact on the design and implementation of research projects and the related opportunities presented for the Greek technology ecosystem will be discussed. Particular attention will be paid to the particularly important work of other international organizations in the specific field.
Short Bio: Dr. Mihalis Kritikos is a Policy Analyst at the Ethics and Integrity Sector of the European Commission (DG-RTD) working on the ethical development of emerging technologies with a special emphasis on AI Ethics. Before that, he worked at the Scientific Foresight Service of the European Parliament as a legal/ethics advisor on Science and Technology issues (STOA/EPRS) authoring more than 50 publications in the domain of new and emerging technologies and contributing to the drafting of more than 15 European Parliament reports/resolutions in the fields of artificial intelligence, robots, distributed ledger technologies and blockchains, precision farming, gene editing and disruptive innovation. He has worked as a Senior Associate in the EU Regulatory and Environment Affairs Department of White and Case, as a Lecturer at several UK Universities and as a Lecturer/Project Leader at the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA). He also taught EU Law and Institutions for several years at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) where he obtained a PhD in Technology Law (London School of Economics-LSE) that earned him the UACES Prize for the Best Thesis in European Studies in Europe.
The CHANGER project is a 3-year European HORIZON Project aiming to promote changes in research ethics reviews by strengthening the capacities of researchers to incorporate ethical judgements in the project design and implementation, and by supporting ethics committees to address new challenges posed by new technologies and new research practices.
