Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), ΗΠΑ (http://cse.uta.edu/)
Brief introduction to CSE UTA by Prof. Fillia Makedon
The University of Texas at Arlington has a very strong Computer Science and Engineering Department (CSE) (cse.uta.edu) which includes 27 tenure track faculty, 12 lecturers, 100 Ph.D. Students and a total of over 950 Graduate and Undergraduate students. The CSE department is one of 7 in the College of Engineering. Its faculty are very active in research and there are over 15 laboratories. It is housed in a new building and has many interdisciplinary projects. New efforts are in applications dealing with healthcare, energy, security and manufacturing. The CSE faculty are very interested in recruiting high quality students that represent different parts of the world, including Europe. Admitted students receive high stipend support and have their tuition covered. They are expected to be aggressive in research that is both deep theoretically and also has compelling application in solving real world problems. The department is actively recruiting in students with computer vision, embedded systems, graphics, signal processing and assistive technologies interests.
The department has had the oldest and very successful joint Ph.D. with NCSR-Demokritos. Three of the students will be graduating soon. This program has offered the Demokritos Fellows dual advising and double the opportunity to publish. It has benefited both the UTA and the NCSR supervisors. Jointly with NCSR, UTA sponsors the annual Petra conference (www.petrae.org), as well as an exciting study abroad program on the island of Samos where the students apply computer technologies to solve environmental problems.
Department of Computer Science at the University of Houston (UH), ΗΠΑ (http://www.cs.uh.edu/)
Brief introduction to UH by Prof. Ioannis Kakadiaris
The University of Houston Department of Computer Science has 24 Faculty members. Selected members of the faculty have received the NSF Career award, served as president of the IEEE Computer Society, or served on the Board of the Computer Research Association. The department is committed to offering a stimulating program with strong emphasis on high quality, state of the art education and research in the highly diverse and cosmopolitan environment that the University of Houston and the city of Houston provide. Research in the Computational Biomedicine Laboratory is motivated by fundamental open problems in image analysis, machine learning, computer vision, pattern recognition and data mining with an emphasis on applications that address some of society’s greatest challenges. The lab fosters innovative collaborations with other institutions, creates transferable technology, and disseminates results to scientific and medical communities and the general public.
The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate leadership abilities and at the same time work effectively as part of a larger team. In addition, the student is expected to take initiatives on a daily basis and to conduct research independently. The graduation standards are high, so each student is expected to be hardworking, well organized, passionate, responsible, honest, enthusiastic and ambitious. Even though the performance of each student is evaluated by the work produced and not by the number of hours spent, the students are expected to be highly committed to their research and studies.
Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of North Texas (UNT), ΗΠΑ (http://www.cse.unt.edu)
Brief introduction to UNT by Prof. Bill Buckles
The University of North Texas is located in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and has approximately 36,000 students. The university supports nearly 80 Ph.D. programs. The Department resides in a spacious research park approximately five km from the main campus and sponsors more than 80 actively-engaged Ph.D. students. Coming from around the world, Ph.D. students must meet UNT’s strict standards for admission, complete a rigorous curriculum, pass a qualifying exam, complete a dissertation, and publish in competitive conferences and journals. Their choices of research areas include natural language processing, computer security, video analytics, bio-informatics, low-power VLSI, robotics, network/wireless systems, computer language semantics, game development, computer-assisted instruction (dialogue systems), theory of computation, and several others. The Department is home to an NSF-supported Industry/University Cooperative Research Center which combines networks, security, and software systems within the context of joint industry-government research.
Upon graduation, many Ph.D. recipients return to their country of origin to assume or resume academic positions. Others acquire faculty positions in the U.S. In recent years, graduates have sought and found positions at highly visible corporations such as Google and Microsoft.
Faculty of Computer Science at the Dalhousie University (DAL), Καναδάς (http://www.cs.dal.ca/)
Brief introduction to The Faculty of Computer Science at DAL by Prof. Evangelos Milios
The Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University is in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, a city with a long maritime tradition, and the regional economic, cultural and research hub of Atlantic Canada. Dalhousie University has world-class oceanography, biology, medicine and science research, and is a member of the U15 (the 15 leading research intensive universities in Canada).
The Faculty was established in 1997, and has developed research strengths in text mining, knowledge management, human-computer interaction, visualization and graphics, computer networks, network management and security, and algorithms. The Faculty has a collaborative culture internally and an interdisciplinary outlook.Admission to the PhD program requires a strong academic and research record, and aptitude for research. The PhD degree has light course requirements (two graduate courses in the intended area of research), and focuses early on in publishable research.
Building on a critical mass of faculty and funded research, the Faculty is in the process of establishing a research institute in Big Data Analytics, which will serve as the focal point for research and industrial collaboration. The Faculty is actively collaborating with other universities in Canada in the context of federally-funded Networks of Centres of Excellence and Strategic Networks. This gives PhD students the opportunity to interact with top research faculty in Canada, develop their personal networks and enrich their PhD studies experience.
Technical School of Informatics at the University of Alcalá (UAH), Ισπανία (https://portal.uah.es/portal/page/portal/investigacion/unidades/grupos)
Brief introduction to the Technical School of Informatics at UAH by Prof. Miguel Angel Sicilia
The University of Alcalá, (UAH, http://www.uah.es) whose origins date back to the year 1499, is currently one of the medium-sized Spanish universities, with 15 faculties and more than twenty thousand students. It is located approximately 30 km. outside of Madrid, in the city of Alcalá de Henares, named a World Heritage site by UNESCO in December 1998, in recognition of the fact that Alcalá was the first university town, planned as such, in the world. The Computer Science Department is located at the School of Informatics and counts with a staff of more than sixty full time persons, providing potential PhD students with access to extensive research facilities, libraries and industry connections in the Technology Park located adjacent to the Polytechnic building.
The PhD program at the School of Informatics of UAH is targeted to highly motivated students that are interested in applied and pluridisciplinary research at the crossroad of computing and real-world applications. Candidates are expected to have a background in Web technology and motivated to work in interdiscipinary teams in the context of international research projects. Strong empirical evaluation of research is required for successful completion of the program together with a balanced publication record during the PhD period.
