The Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications (IIT) at NCSR Demokritos participated in the International Conference “The Role of Academia in Promoting Child Rights”, which was co-organised by the UNICEF Greece Country Office and the University of Patras on June 6 and 7, 2025, in Patras.
Dr Dora Katsamori, Associate Researcher at IIT, delivered a presentation emphasising the importance of equipping young people to become active citizens in the era of Artificial Intelligence.
Dr Katsamori underlined the critical need for children and youth to be included in conversations surrounding AI and to have a voice in shaping policies regarding its use. During her talk, she introduced the YouthGovAI project and shared preliminary findings from a nationwide survey that examined young people’s knowledge and attitudes towards AI.
The conference facilitated the exchange of international and national experiences and best practices on how academia can effectively promote and protect child rights, with a focus on diverse international perspectives. It brought together members of the academic community, representatives from UNICEF and other United Nations agencies, child rights experts, practitioners, policymakers, officials from central and local government, various Civil Society organisations, as well as children and young people themselves.
