Dr. Constantine Spyropoulos and Dr. Vangelis Karkaletsis travelled to the US where they had meetings to discuss current achievements and future possibilities of IIT’s research collaborations with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), the University of North Texas (UNT) and the University of Houston (UH). They also visited the University of Texas at Dallas (UTDallas) to discuss the potential research and educational cooperation between the two institutions.
More specifically, during their visit to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UNT (http://www.cse.unt.edu), they had the chance to present the activities of IIT to the Department and also have separate meetings with faculty members to discuss research collaboration in various issues of common interest. Research collaboration has already started with some of them and both parties expressed strong interest to explore this further.
Their visit to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UTA (http://cse.uta.edu/), involved:
Participation as committee members to the PhD defense of the first three PhD students of the joint NCSR-UTA PhD programme. Paul Doliotis, Georgios Galatas, Alexandros Papangelis, presented their PhD theses successfully.
Monitoring the progress of the two new students of the joint PhD programme, Konstantinos Tsiakas and Alexandros Lioulemes
Discussing potential collaboration with UTA Research Institute (UTARI, http://www.uta.edu/utari/) in the area of robotics. Dr. Karkaletsis gave a talk on the relevant IIT activities.
Meeting faculty members aiming to strengthen and extend the existing collaboration.
Discussing the involvement of IIT in the recently established UCRC iPerform center (http://iperform.uta.edu/), an NSF funded research center that represents collaborations of professors and scientists at UTA and UTDallas.
The aim of the visit to the Department of Computer Science at UTDallas (http://cs.utdallas.edu/) was to inform them on NCSR and IIT’s research activities, and discuss the potential collaboration in the context of research projects as well as in a joint PhD programme. The Dept Head Prof. Gopal Gupta as well as the Assoc. Head Prof. Ovidiu Daescu expressed their strong interest in such a collaboration.
The visit to the UH involved:
several meetings with faculty members at the Dept of Computer Science (http://www.cs.uh.edu/)
monitoring the progress of the first student of the joint PhD programme, Georgios Giannoulis
several meetings at the Dept of Electrical and Computer Engineering in order to extend the existing agreement with them (http://www.ee.uh.edu/)
meeting with the Dean of the Graduate School Prof. Dimitri Litvinov, to discuss the next steps in this cooperation programme
