He graduated from the Department of Physics at the University of Crete, and holds a specialisation in Computational Physics from the same department, as well as a PhD degree in the field of machine learning for natural language processing from the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He served as a doctoral fellow at the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of NCSR “Demokritos” (1997 – 2002), a collaborating researcher (2002 – 2019), and a Researcher (Grade C) (2019 – 2023) at the same institute, as well as an external associate of the Institute of Nuclear Technology and Radiation Protection of NCSR “Demokritos” (2003 – 2010). He is the Head of the “Content Analysis and Knowledge Technologies” research group (CAKT), and the co-Head of the “Artificial Intelligence for Culture” research group (ARTIFACT), at the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of NCSR “Demokritos”. He has worked on more than 30 national and European projects, and the results of his research work have been recorded in more than 95 publications in scientific books, journals, and conference proceedings, which have received numerous citations. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society, and was also the founder of the company “Intellitech”, which specialises in natural language processing services. He is a member of the Coordinating Committees in the Inter-Institutional Postgraduate Programs in “Data Science” (University of Peloponnese – NCSR “Demokritos”) and “Artificial Intelligence” (University of Piraeus – NCSR “Demokritos”), and has taught a plethora of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
