National Plan for Open Science

NCSR-D, mainly through IIT, actively participated to Greece’s Open Science Task Force, a collaborative bottom-up initiative of 11 national academic & research organisations and twenty-six research infrastructures & civic initiatives to draft a National Plan for Open Science.

The Plan is intended to serve as a reference point for national policy makers towards the establishment of a national strategy for Open Science, assist national organizations in embracing Open Science principles and ensure national alignment with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

Οpen Science is the new standard of practices, means and collaboration for producing and distributing scientific output and research results, with a direct scientific, economic, and societal impact. Open Science focuses on the Researcher and the Citizen, allowing free access to scientific results, promoting a participatory research process, supporting the verifiability of scientific results, well-documented decision-making and innovation. The National Plan for Open Science proposes a series of goals, policies and actions for the adoption of the core principles of Open Science, that include, inter alia, Open Access to (a) scientific publications, (b) research data, (c) research software, as well as (d) research infrastructures and services.

As a first step of the implementation process, NCSR “Demokritos” recently established an “Open Science Team” under its “e- Governance Office”, responsible for:

  • The creation and maintenance of institutional repositories for research publications, research data and research software
  • The interoperability of the institutional repositories with the respective National and European repositories
  • Personnel training in the use of the above repositories
  • The development of Data Management Plans (DMPs) policy for the needs of the national, European, and international research projects implemented by NCSR “Demokritos” and the support of the researchers in DMPs drafting,
  • Supporting researchers in creating reusable, portable software which operates on Cloud and HPC infrastructures that meet specific requirements
  • Service provision to third parties using the data and software of the institutional repositories of NCSR “Demokritos”.
