Abstract:

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the technological environment, creating new opportunities but also challenges with social implications. The Research Ethics Committees (RECs) of universities and research centers play a decisive role in ensuring research ethics as they examine submitted research proposals and assess whether they comply with guidelines, the existing legal framework, and whether they are designed with respect for the rights of participants and, more broadly, of those affected. The complexity and innovation of AI research bring to light challenges that need to be identified during the research ethics review process, making the role of RECs particularly demanding. This PhD research focuses on identifying the ethical challenges related to research in the field of AI and explores policies for more effective evaluation of research proposals in this field.
